Role Overview
We are seeking a distinguished and dynamic academic leader for the Endowed Chair in African Studies. This role will focus on advancing scholarly research and education around African cultures, histories, and contemporary issues, contributing to the understanding and appreciation of African societies within a global context.
Responsibilities
- Develop and lead innovative research initiatives that enhance the understanding of Africa's diverse cultures and contributions to global society.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in African Studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and critical thinking.
- Mentor students and junior faculty, fostering academic growth and encouraging innovative research methodologies.
- Collaborate with local and international academic institutions and organizations to promote African Studies.
- Engage with community partners, policymakers, and stakeholders to disseminate research findings and advocate for African Studies.
- Contribute to the development of curriculum and programs that reflect contemporary African issues and scholarship.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Ph.D. in African Studies or a related field with a strong focus on African scholarship.
- Demonstrated record of scholarly publications and research in African Studies.
- Experience in teaching at the university level with a commitment to student engagement and success.
Preferred:
- Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.
- Proven leadership experience in academic program development and curriculum design.
- Fluency in relevant African languages and/or familiarity with African cultural contexts.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in research methodologies and data analysis techniques relevant to African Studies.
- Experience with digital humanities tools and platforms that enhance the accessibility of African scholarship.
- Familiarity with grant writing and funding acquisition for research projects.
Soft Skills and Cultural Fit
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
