Learning Experience Designer
Location: Remote - NZ
Full-time | Fixed Term | Remote - Anywhere in NZ

Role Purpose:
We are seeking an experienced Learning Experience Designer to join our team on a 6-month fixed-term contract. This is a fully remote position and we are open to reviewing applicants from anywhere in New Zealand.

In this role, you will be responsible for designing and developing inclusive, high-quality digital learning experiences that engage, challenge, and support diverse learners. You will contribute to the creation of accessible, culturally responsive, and constructively aligned programmes that reflect best practice in tertiary education.
This role requires deep pedagogical and heutagogical knowledge, along with a strong foundation in teaching and learning, learning design, and learning technology. You will design learning that reflects the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, embeds authentic assessment, and supports dialogic feedback cycles that foster meaningful learning relationships. You will work collaboratively across teams to deliver bespoke, creative learning narratives that enhance learner engagement, autonomy, and success.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design and develop learner-centred courses that align with UP Education’s digital quality framework.

  • Embed pedagogical and heutagogical strategies that promote learner agency, critical thinking, and real-world application.

  • Apply culturally responsive and inclusive design practices, upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

  • Use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to design for diverse learning needs, with a strong focus on accessibility.

  • Lead the development of authentic assessments that reflect real-world contexts and challenges.

  • Ensure constructive alignment of learning outcomes, content, teaching strategies, and assessments across programmes.

  • Support dialogic feedback cycles that enable meaningful interaction between learners and educators.

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts, academic teams, and stakeholders to co-create engaging and relevant learning content.

  • Design creative and bespoke learning narratives that reflect the values, identity, and needs of Aotearoa’s diverse learners.

  • Integrate rich media and multimodal content, interactive tools (e.g. H5P), and LMS features to enhance the learner experience.

  • Ensure learning design is consistent with NZQA requirements, cognitive load theory, and programme credit levels.

  • Engage with continuous improvement processes, using learner feedback and learning analytics to refine learning design.

  • Maintain ethical practice in the use of third-party content, referencing, and copyright compliance.

  • Contribute to project planning, milestone setting, and the timely delivery of learning products.

  • Promote a strong team culture of collaboration, creativity, and shared success.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in education, instructional design, or related discipline. 

  • Proven experience in teaching and learning, particularly in a tertiary or creative learning environment. 

  • Strong background in digital learning design and curriculum development. 

  • Deep understanding of inclusive and culturally responsive pedagogies, including UDL and accessibility standards. 

  • Experience designing authentic assessments and applying constructive alignment across courses and programmes. 

  • Familiarity with dialogic learning and feedback practices. 

  • Demonstrated creativity in crafting engaging, relevant, and bespoke learning experiences. 

  • Experience with LMS platforms (e.g. Moodle, Canvas) and learning technologies (e.g. H5P, video production, HTML)

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and disciplines. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Excellent time management and project coordination skills.
