The cloud-backed terminal for individuals and teams

Warp is modernizing the command line experience to make it more intuitive and collaborative for modern developers and teams, turning the terminal into a real platform to enable engineering workflows. Our mission is to elevate developer productivity, and the team is excited to have this opportunity to radically improve a tool that every developer uses and fundamentally change how software development and devops are done.

We’re hiring our second Product Manager at Warp to contribute to the vision, strategy, and roadmap of Warp.

This is an opportunity to work on arguably the most important developer tool ever: the terminal. Warp has built a much-loved product with hundreds of thousands of active free users. As one of our first 2 PMs, you will be crucial in laying the foundation for our product processes. You will play a key role in Warp’s monetization efforts.

You will report to the Product Lead and share product responsibilities with another PM on the team. You will start first leading products in Enterprise and Product Growth. However, as Warp is a dynamic startup, you will soon take on more areas over time as well.

As a PM, these are your responsibilities…

  • You will drive on the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for Warp’s enterprise products at Warp.
  • You will run products that support account expansion both in free accounts and paying accounts.
  • You will run product growth initiatives to improve activation, acquisition, and paid conversion.
  • To inform the roadmap, you will lead design partnerships, run data analyses, and have regular conversations with enterprise customers and users.
  • You will help shape our pricing and packaging strategy, in collaboration with Growth and Sales
  • You will partner with a wide range of cross-functional partners across Design, Engineering, and Growth, to help prioritize features and ensure their successful launch.
  • You will partner with the Account Executive in technical negotiations and account expansion.

You may be a good fit if...

  • You have at least 1 year of full-time software engineer experience and/or a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • You have experience working on software sold to software companies.
  • You have experience interfacing with enterprise customers and translating their feedback into the product roadmap.
  • You have used the terminal before.
  • You’re comfortable with analyzing data and are comfortable with SQL and tools like Metabase (data visualization) and BigQuery.
  • You understand the difference between leading features focused on the user and leading features focused on the business, and how they impact each other.
  • You’re very familiar with the concept of “bringing the team with you” from an early idea onward. You have experience collaborating cross-functionally with marketing, engineering, sales, and design.
  • You orient towards getting user feedback as early as possible.
  • Bonus:
    • You have experience with A/B tests and optimizing funnels.
    • You have experience running design partnerships.
    • You have worked in a startup before.
    • You have experience founding a company to reach product-market fit.
    • You have prior experience in developer tools.

In addition to salary, all employees receive further compensation in the form of equity in the company. This is a meaningful stock option grant with a four-year vesting period and one-year cliff. Your equity is where most of the significant upside potential is. Comparing startup equity is always a bit tricky, so we’re happy to walk you through different valuation scenarios at the offer stage in order to help paint a clearer picture of the upside.

Final total compensation is determined by multiple factors including your experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

About Warp

We are a company run by product-first builders, building a core product for all developers. We are committed to understanding our users deeply. We believe we will ultimately build the best product and business if that team includes developers and designers from a wide range of backgrounds. The early team comes from Google, Dropbox, Gem, LinkedIn, and Facebook. We are looking for passionate individuals to join us and help bring Warp to the world.

We value honesty, humility, and pragmatism, and our core product principle is focusing on the user. If you’re interested in learning more about our company values and what our engineering team culture is like, please take a look at our internal How We Work guide.

We’re very fortunate to be backed by a great group of venture capital firms. In August 2023, we announced a $50M Series B funding round ($73M total raised), led by Sequoia Capital. Our other investors include Google Ventures, Neo, and Box Group. We are also backed by a network of passionate angels, including Dylan Field (Co-Founder and CEO, Figma), Elad Gil (early investor in Airbnb, Pinterest, Stripe, and Square), Jeff Weiner (Executive Chairman and Ex-CEO, LinkedIn), Marc Benioff (Founder and CEO, Salesforce), and Sam Altman (Co-Founder CEO, OpenAI).

The Product

Here's our latest demo showing some of our current features…

This is just the start, as our plan is to build out a set of experiences in the terminal that don’t exist today like collaboration, environment sharing, rich data types and more.

The Opportunity

The terminal is one of very few tools used by every developer every day, which makes it an ideal gateway to improving all sorts of developer activities. We believe there is an opportunity to build a unicorn-sized business improving the command-line. Our strategy is bottom-up developer adoption, followed by driving revenue through enterprise sales and distribution partnerships.

To start, our goal is to become the everyday terminal of choice with individual users – immediately usable as a backwards-compatible terminal replacement with the developer’s shell of choice. We have built a closed-source server, which will implement all of the cloud-enabled features. These features will invite users to share their work with others, driving growth and encouraging collaboration. We’ll also focus on building a community and an ecosystem of terminal plugins and apps, creating network effects.

At higher levels of team penetration, we will offer an enterprise plan with features around privacy, security and environment management (e.g. secure distribution and management of API keys). These larger enterprise plans will be the ultimate driver of revenue, along with potential distribution deals for companies that see CLI integrations as a way to reach new customers.

A couple college students, totally unprompted, wrote a piece on why new students should work at Warp as part of their new newsletter they are launching called "Why You Should Join." It's an incredibly well researched and thoughtful article about the market and competitive landscape, and accurately reflects our thesis. Read it here.

Re-creating the command line to be more useable, humane, and powerful for everyone.

We care deeply about design and user experience and are trying to improve the design of a tool that traditionally has had a horrible UX. Warp is changing how every software engineer works with the terminal, one of their core tools, which hasn’t been redesigned in decades. We’re looking for outstanding product designers to join our early team to help reimagine how developers get more done; we need to build this product the right way from the start. It needs to be intuitive, seamless, and delightful.

The command line is both incredibly powerful and annoyingly hard to use. It hasn’t been updated since its introduction in the 1970’s, and this stagnation certainly shows in today’s user experience. Even though the terminal is a tool that every developer uses everyday, it has a notoriously steep learning curve: it doesn't work like other tools, nothing in it helps you learn how to use it well, it's very easy to make destructive mistakes…the list goes on. For all these reasons, getting comfortable with the terminal can take quite some time. But for those who do learn how to use it well, they can greatly improve their productivity and workflow — getting much more done in less time.

Our Ethos

The command line is both incredibly powerful and annoyingly hard to use.

Master it and gain super-powers: from controlling your cloud systems, to manipulating local files and programs, writing quick workflows and more...it's a developer's swiss-army knife.

Despite its power, it's a very hard tool to master. It has a notoriously steep learning curve - it doesn't work like other tools, nothing in it helps you learn how to use it well, it's very easy to make destructive mistakes, and so on.

Many developers avoid it for these reasons. But for those who do learn how to use it well, they become much better at development and devops. Mastering the CLI lets you work faster with your existing tools, and increases their power because a keyboard driven, repl-style interface has many advantages over GUIs.

At Warp, our goal is to re-create the command line as a modern app, making a more usable, humane and, ultimately, more powerful CLI for everyone.
