Job Summary
VIZ Media, the world leader in English-language versions of manga and anime (Japanese comics and animation), is looking for a Platform Engineer to join our Engineering team. The Platform Engineer works embedded with the software development team to help manage the operational aspects of our proprietary production software systems (including both external customer-facing systems and home-grown internal systems for metadata management and reporting).
Key facets of this role include working closely within the dev team to plan and manage day-to-day software deployment activities among our AWS-hosted systems; monitoring cloud resource consumption and performance, and working with the greater dev team to notify of and address issues and concerns; helping to maintain and improve our deployment processes and automation techniques; assisting with managing our source-control and CI-test settings to facilitate sound software-development process; and helping plan and budget for infrastructure needs to support new product and feature requirements.
What you’ll do:
- Play a technical operations role within our software development team
- Assume day-to-day development-operations responsibilities in collaboration with dev management to bring new products and features to market, help diagnose system problems, and turn around solutions
- Contribute to evolving our software deployment tools as part of continual efforts to improve the operational efficiency of our software development & deployment processes
- Collaborate with the dev team and others across the company to identify and refine requirements for the software platform and systems
- Contribute to implementation of key infrastructure and subsystems
- Provide recommendations to management concerning issues of programmer productivity and software development process
- Contribute to the evolution of the team’s technical infrastructure (e.g., repository, build system, testing system)
- Work closely with other members of engineering and IT teams
Ideal Experience and Training:
Must Haves:
- A solid foundation in computer science, with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and software design
- Experience with Amazon Web Services
- Experience with managing the full stack of a software application in a cloud-based infrastructure
- Proficiency with relational databases
- Proficiency with popular application programming languages (Ruby/Rails)
- Proficiency with Web/HTML5 (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) technologies
- Ability to complete a technical project independently and as part of a team
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines
- Ability to communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse clients, providers, and staff
Preferred but not Required:
- 6+ years of engineering experience, ideally in media companies or related industries
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or equivalent experience, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position
- Experience with Google GCP
- Experience with high-traffic production systems
- Experience with web browser or mobile-app engineering
- Experience with NoSQL databases
Work Environment & Schedule
Location: The Platform Engineer position is open to candidates located in California, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Texas. If the Engineer is local to the San Francisco Bay Area, VIZ Media operates on a hybrid schedule with 1 day of work onsite at our downtown San Francisco office expected weekly. Otherwise, this will be a remote position.
Schedule: This is a Regular Full-Time position (40 hours per week) with core hours of 10 am to 4 pm with some flexibility as needed. The Platform Engineer may need to work late or on weekends and be on-call for emergencies on occasion.
Compensation: $120,000 - $145,000 annually, depending on experience, with additional variable compensation
