Viking's story began in a small way in 1960, when Rolf Ostern opened a modest office supply store in Los Angeles, California. What started as a local retail operation quickly evolved when Ostern introduced a catalogue to supplement his store sales—a move that would become the company's defining marketing strategy. By the mid-1970s, Viking had established itself as a premier mail-order retailer of discount office supplies on the West Coast, serving small and medium-sized businesses with a commitment to 'fanatical customer service'.

The company's ambition soon crossed the Atlantic. In 1990, Viking launched its European operations, establishing a headquarters in the United Kingdom and rapidly expanding into markets across the continent, including Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria. This expansion marked the beginning of Viking's transformation into a true multinational player. Over the decades, the company navigated significant changes, including its acquisition by Office Depot in 1998 and its subsequent sale to the RAJA Group in 2021. Today, as part of the RAJA Group, Viking continues its legacy as a leading expert in workplace solutions, operating from its European headquarters in Venlo, the Netherlands, and helping businesses of all sizes create productive and sustainable work environments.
