We’re seeking a highly skilled OSP Make-Ready Engineer to evaluate aerial pole infrastructure, perform structural analysis, and produce compliant, build-ready documentation that supports fiber deployment across the country. If you understand pole loading from the power down, NESC clearances, and make-ready recommendations inside and out, then his role is for you.

As an OSP Make-Ready Engineer, you will be responsible for assessing aerial utility poles, conducting pole loading analysis, and developing make-ready engineering (MRE) packages to support telecommunications and broadband infrastructure projects. Your work will directly impact construction readiness, safety compliance, and coordination with joint-use owners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate aerial utility poles for structural viability, clearance, and attachment opportunities from power space to communication space
  • Conduct detailed pole loading analysis (PLA) using software such as O-Calc Pro, SpidaCalc, or PoleForeman
  • Develop accurate make-ready recommendations including relocations, replacements, guying, risers, and down guys
  • Review pole configuration, height, class, existing loads, and tension forces to determine compliance with NESC and owner specifications
  • Collaborate with field survey teams to verify pole dimensions, attachment heights, span lengths, and clearance measurements
  • Prepare and submit MRE/PLA reports, including annotated photos, sketches, and redlines in KMZ or GIS-based formats
  • Interface with permitting and joint-use teams to support pole application submittals
  • Ensure all deliverables meet client, utility, and regulatory standards (e.g., NESC Rule 235, 238, 239)
  • Communicate with power utilities and joint-use pole owners to respond to feedback or revisions during make-ready coordination

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • 2+ years of experience in OSP aerial engineering, make-ready engineering, or pole loading analysis
  • Proficiency with pole loading software: O-Calc, SpidaCalc, PoleForeman, or equivalent
  • Solid understanding of pole structure classifications, tension loads, guying design, and utility attachment clearance standards
  • In-depth knowledge of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code) as it applies to aerial fiber design and clearances
  • Experience preparing permit-ready MRE packages and reviewing field-collected structure data
  • Ability to read construction prints, interpret pole charts, and communicate technical issues effectively
  • Familiarity with KMZ mapping, Google Earth, Smartsheet, or GIS platforms is a plus
Bonus Points For:
  • Experience working directly with power companies or joint-use pole owners.
  • Field experience capturing pole data, heights, guying structures, and clearance photos
  • Familiarity and connections with joint use standards from major utilities (e.g., Duke, Georgia Power, PG&E, Oncor, etc.)
  • Exposure to grant-funded broadband projects (BEAD, RDOF) and their permitting structures

Benefits

  • Competitive weekly pay and compensation package;
  • Health Insurance plans (health, dental, vision);
  • Whole Life Insurance;
  • 401k Plan;
  • PTO/Paid Holidays;
  • Long-term, career-track employment with growth opportunities into technical or leadership roles .
