The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor position with an anticipated start date of August 2022. This is a University-year (9-month) position with the possibility for additional teaching in the summer. This position is 75% teaching and 25% administrative/service/scholarship. The typical teaching load includes six courses per year, normally three courses per semester. Primary leadership and teaching responsibilities will be associated with course design, coordinating multiple sections, and teaching a core scientific writing course (MOVESCI 219) in the undergraduate Movement Science curriculum. The course is designed to equip students with writing skills and related research knowledge to effectively communicate research findings in the movement sciences. The course focuses on developing student capacity for analyzing and synthesizing scientific research literature and research. Other teaching opportunities may be possible based on the successful candidate’s area of expertise and program needs but scientific writing is the priority. Administrative responsibilities will be based on the programs’ needs and the expertise and prior experience of the candidate; some examples include curriculum development, contribution to new academic courses or programs, inclusive teaching initiatives, collaborative research and scholarship. Engagement in professional scholarship and participation in departmental, university, and/or community service is expected. A competitive salary will be offered, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

The School of Kinesiology (www.kines.umich.edu) is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools and colleges within the University of Michigan. The School is led by a Dean, and has 31 tenure-line faculty, eight clinical faculty and over 1000 undergraduate and graduate students. The School of Kinesiology has recently relocated to a completely renovated building with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities in the heart of the University of Michigan Central Campus https://www.kines.umich.edu/about/new-building. The new building includes state-of-the-art facilities to support clinical exercise physiology teaching and research. This includes dedicated lecture and laboratory classrooms, a clinical exercise physiology research laboratory, along with many other research laboratories and centers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. preferred, master’s degree considered, in kinesiology or a related field. The successful candidate must have expertise with the scientific writing process. While a doctoral degree is preferred, master’s degree-holding candidates with a particularly strong background in scientific and/or technical writing are also encouraged to apply. Two or more years of teaching in higher education is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants whose scientific writing experience is in the human movement sciences (biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, or related areas).
