The Role

The Advisor, Philanthropic Services, is a core member of the Philanthropic Services team and the broader Partnership Services Department at Tides. This team provides integrated services for individual, family, foundation, and social change leader partners to support grantmaking, impact investing, advocacy, donor collaboration, and strategic advisory solutions. The Advisor manages a portfolio of partner relationships with diverse needs, interests, and values. This position will primarily support individuals and organizational partners. The Advisor provides sector knowledge and strategic advising to help elevate the impact social change leaders seek to achieve, as well as thought partnership on the tools and compliance that can help advance their social justice goals and needs.

This position is classified as part of our collective bargaining unit (SEIU 1021).

What you will Do

Partner Management (70%)

  • Manage a portfolio of donors and fund partners, with a focus on collective action funds and single entity funds, to strategically guide fundraising and grantmaking that often supports community organizing, civic engagement, and amplifying community voices to address systemic racism, voter protection and other injustices.
  • In partnership with the Philanthropic service team, facilitate and oversee each partner’s operational day-to-day engagement with the Foundation.
  • Proactively establish short- and long-term partner engagement goals to increase strategic giving among fund partners, tracks and measures partner engagement activities and their outcomes.
  • Lead, plan, implement, and continually refine services, programs and projects that work to streamline Tides partner solutions or meaningfully engage partners in the philanthropic services of Tides and with other partners in ways that will maximize resources and expertise to meet community needs.
  • Keep Tides staff and partners informed of important issues affecting organizations, programs, and funding needs through meeting and communicating regularly with nonprofit leaders and other subject experts; monitor trends and policy changes affecting the philanthropic sector at large.
  • Conduct site visits/Zoom check-ins, organizational analysis, research projects, and other activities to support Tides efforts to build community knowledge strengthen under resourced/under-represented groups - especially BIPOC leaders, organizations, communities, and others that face systemic barriers to power.

Department Advancement (25%)

  • Seek to impact the sector through replicable programs that provide highly valuable, cutting-edge partner services.
  • Support the development and implementation of program-wide activities, as needed, including drafting blogs and perspectives that highlight Tides’ work in action.
  • Serve on organizational and/or departmental project teams, as needed.
  • Participate in onboarding and mentorship of new staff; co-develop department team-building activities.

Network Engagement (5%)

  • Represent Tides at conferences, webinars, gatherings, professional associations, and other external events.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Partnerships and the Partnership Services departments to develop strategies to move partners up the ladder of engagement.
  • Support proposal development, as needed, based on areas of expertise and interest.
  • Work cross-functionally to support networking-building opportunities and convenings, strengthening the Tides brand and point of view, as well as harnessing the wisdom and skills of our network.
  • Develop and maintain broad external relations with philanthropic partners.

What you will Bring

  • Strong alignment with Tides’ Vision, Mission, and Approach and our organizational values of respect, equity, empowerment, accountability, and creativity.
  • Passion for philanthropy and the nonprofit community; deep understanding of best practices in working with donors, and social change leaders.
  • Significant experience as a funder or in guiding funders/donors through philanthropic giving vehicles, as well as the various laws and regulations affecting them.
  • Experience with fundraising, proposal development, grant writing and grant reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of fiscal sponsorship models and other intermediary roles and/or experience with movement building/grassroots policy/advocacy work.
  • Excellent customer service (responsiveness) and communication skills (listening, interpersonal, verbal, and written).
  • Proficient writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to gather and organize information appropriately and effectively, strong research and synthesizing abilities.
  • Strong planning and implementation skills; excellent ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple competing assignments and responsibilities.
  • A high degree of professionalism, confidence, and flexibility that allows for working collaboratively and effectively with clients and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent ability to work well in a team (and virtual) environment; ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship across departments, and with members of the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong project management skills and self-direction.

Education & Experience

  • BA/BS or higher degree, or equivalent work experience may be substituted for a college degree.
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience in project/program management, grantmaking process and policies, and relationship building.
  • Extensive experience in or with the nonprofit sector, preferred.
  • Experience working with Google Suite, MS Office Suite, NetSuite, grants management systems, Salesforce, or other CRM platforms.

Compensation

Tides is committed to providing a competitive compensation package. We value pay equity and account for factors such as your location within the U.S., your skills and your relevant experience, and we will not ask for your salary history. Your starting salary will fall into one of three ranges, depending on your location:

  • National market: $69,900 - $87,400 (Most U.S. states)
  • Moderate market: $76,300 - $95,400 (Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. metro areas)
  • High market: $87,000 - $104,900 (New York City & San Francisco metro areas)
