Job Description:

The Criminology Department is seeking a highly qualified candidate for an adjunct faculty position for the online Bachelor of Arts Criminology program. This position requires subject matter expertise in the field of criminology. This position requires subject matter expertise in the foundational areas of criminology to facilitate real-world connections between academic theory and the justice system. The program centers on next-generation leadership and the study of human behavior within the justice system, with a focus on community safety and the experiences of justice-involved individuals. Online courses are taught through the Canvas learning management system. Prior to teaching, all new adjunct faculty members will participate in a seven-week Teaching Online Pedagogy and Standards (TOPS) course covering best practices in online education.

Principal Duties:

  • The candidate will teach one or more core courses within the criminology field, including Law & Society, Juvenile Delinquency, Corrections, Criminological Theories, and the Criminology Capstone.
  • The instructor is required to host one or more topical live class sessions during the course term.
  • There are a total of six terms per academic year, each lasting eight weeks. Courses may be offered for one or more terms throughout the academic year.
  • Instruction includes engaging students through discussions and assignments while fostering proficiency and readiness in course-specific competencies.
  • Instructors are expected to provide students with substantive, timely feedback on writing assignments and respond to student questions or concerns.
  • Adjunct instructors will attend virtual departmental meetings and professional development events at least once during the teaching term.

Position Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in either Criminal Justice or Criminology is required, though candidates who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program and have reached ABD (All But Dissertation) status will be considered.
  • Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level or experience as a Teaching Assistant is required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate experience with student engagement and grading academic writing assignments.
  • Direct experience with online teaching and the use of technology in a virtual classroom is strongly preferred.
  • Candidates must possess the specific ability and knowledge to grade academic writing assignments and guide students in information literacy and scholarly practices.
