Staff Software Engineer, Motion Control

Stack AV
United States only

About Stack:

Stack is developing revolutionary AI and advanced autonomous systems designed to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency of modern operations. Stack's autonomous technology incorporates cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and cloud technologies, empowering us to create innovative solutions that address the needs and challenges of the dynamic trucking transportation industry. With decades of experience creating and deploying real world systems for demanding environments, the Stack team is dedicated to developing an autonomous solution ecosystem tailored to the trucking industry's unique demands.

About the Role:

We are looking for experienced software engineers to help in developing and deploying the motion control stack for next generation self driving systems. In this role, you will own real-time, safety critical components, setting the vision for the motion control stack and work in all phases of the software development cycle, from solution design to deployment to production. In this highly cross-functional role you will constantly collaborate with various teams in Autonomy, Hardware, Systems Engineering and Operations, fostering a culture of safety, principled engineering and a customer oriented mindset.

Responsibilities:

  • Be part of a team of engineers to develop state of the art, robust motion control modules for self driving vehicle systems.
  • Own delivery of motion control components that solve on-vehicle problems and deliver for customer needs - providing a well controlled, safe and comfortable vehicle experience.
  • Provide feedback on the technical direction for the team, and work cross-functionally to develop safe systems. This will include working closely with upstream teams, especially planning and localization, to ensure that the motion control modules fit well with the system.
  • Work closely with systems engineers to ensure a safe, well tested product is delivered.
  • Work closely with verification teams to ensure proper testing and validation of the motion control modules. Make extensive use of unit testing, simulation, and log simulation to properly validate their work.
  • Spend time on the vehicles to experience in person how motion control features affect truck behavior and aid in tuning the control algorithms.
  • Provide input to team roadmaps and ensure timely delivery of features.
  • Develop motion control models for real time, resource constrained applications.
  • Be involved in design and iteration exercises, and help to align stakeholders by using strong presentation and communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • Experience building motion control systems for real world applications with a strong understanding of the pros and cons of various motion control approaches. Controls experience with large ground vehicles is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with real-time algorithms.
  • Strong experience in software engineering and algorithm design.
  • Fluent in C++.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Extensive vehicle integration experience.
  • Localization and planning experience is a plus.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We believe that diverse teams produce the best ideas and outcomes. We are committed to building a culture of inclusion, entrepreneurship, and innovation across gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and identity.
