ABOUT THE ROLE
As an Engineering Manager at Spellbook, you’ll lead a high-performing, distributed engineering team building powerful AI tools for legal professionals. You'll combine technical leadership with people management, helping engineers grow while driving product delivery and architectural excellence. You’ll be hands-on in the code and in the strategy — setting direction, guiding implementation, and making key decisions that balance product innovation with system scalability and reliability.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and support a team of engineers working across the stack on Spellbook’s AI-powered application.
Partner closely with product management, design, and leadership to shape and execute the engineering roadmap.
Stay hands-on — contributing to system architecture, reviewing code, and writing production-level code.
Mentor and grow engineers through feedback, coaching, and career development support.
Use LLMs from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others to enhance workflows for legal teams, driving innovation through applied AI.
Ensure product quality, performance, and reliability through architectural guidance, operational excellence, and rigorous testing.
Champion a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and ownership.
QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years of experience in software development, with 1–3+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role.
Strong technical skills, particularly in JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node, and AWS.
Proven ability to lead teams building production-grade applications, ideally in fast-paced startup environments.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to translate technical vision into team direction.
Demonstrated experience in growing engineers and building healthy team dynamics.
Ability to take ambiguous product requirements and turn them into clear plans and successful deliveries.
Deep understanding of software development fundamentals, system design, and modern web architectures.
NICE TO HAVES
Experience working directly with LLMs and prompt engineering.
Familiarity with tRPC, Vite, esbuild, or swc.
Prior experience with infrastructure-as-code using AWS CDK.
Passion for mentoring and developing junior engineers.
Track record of launching innovative products at scale.
