Smith College is a private liberal arts women's college located in Northampton, Massachusetts. Chartered in 1871 following a bequest from Sophia Smith, the college opened its doors in 1875 with 14 students and six faculty members. Sophia Smith's vision was to provide young women with an education equal to that afforded to men, a mission that continues to guide the institution. Today, Smith College is one of the largest women's liberal arts colleges in the United States, enrolling approximately 2,600 undergraduate students from nearly every state and over 50 countries. [2, 4, 7] The college is a member of the historic Seven Sisters colleges and the Five College Consortium, which allows students to take courses at four other nearby institutions: Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Smith College offers a robust open curriculum, with students having access to over 1,000 courses across more than 50 areas of study in the social sciences and history, the arts, languages, literature, engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences. It was notably the first women's college in the United States to grant its own undergraduate degrees in engineering through its Picker Engineering Program. [2, 4] The college emphasizes providing both strong educational offerings and practical experiences to prepare students for lives of distinction and purpose, enabling them to address complex global challenges. [4, 7] Smith is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, fostering an intellectual community composed of students from varied backgrounds. The campus itself spans 147 acres and was designed as a botanical garden and arboretum by Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1890s, featuring over 1,200 varieties of trees and shrubs. [5, 12] The institution also houses the Sophia Smith Collection, one of the world's oldest and largest women's history archives. Smith College has a strong alumnae network of over 48,000 graduates who are active in various professional fields worldwide.
