Penn State University

Penn State is a major, public, research-I university serving Pennsylvania and the global community. Founded in 1855, Pennsylvania's first and only land-grant institution has a broad mission of teaching, research, and public service. The university was created in response to a gift of 200 acres from gentleman farmer James Irvin of Bellefonte, and its founding President, Evan Pugh, drew upon the scientific knowledge he acquired in Europe to create a curriculum that melded theoretical studies with practical applications.

As a land-grant institution, Penn State has evolved expanded its curriculum to reflect its commitment to offer a broad education that includes engineering, sciences, liberal arts, and more since receiving that designation in the 1880s. The university now comprises 24 campuses across Pennsylvania and the online World Campus, offering a flexible educational model.
