Job Summary:

The Microsoft 365 Systems Engineer is a senior-level technical expert responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and optimization of the organization’s Microsoft 365 environment. This role ensures the performance, security, and availability of services such as Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Entra ID, Intune, and Microsoft Purview. Acting as a strategic partner and technical lead, the engineer drives adoption of new tools, supports enterprise-wide collaboration initiatives, and aligns technology solutions with business objectives. The ideal candidate brings deep technical knowledge, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally to support a secure, scalable, and modern digital workplace.

Responsibilities:

The Microsoft 365 Systems Engineer is a senior-level, hands-on technical leader responsible for the full lifecycle management of the organization’s Microsoft 365 ecosystem. This role plays a strategic and influential part in shaping the enterprise's technology landscape, ensuring that M365 platforms are not only operationally sound but also aligned with long-term business goals.

This individual is accountable for the configuration, performance, availability, security, and continuous improvement of Microsoft 365 servicesincluding Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Intunein both cloud-only and hybrid environments. This position leads the design, implementation, and administration of M365 services, with a strong focus on optimization, automation, and integration with third-party tools and systems.

The Systems Engineer will spearhead initiatives to enhance collaboration and productivity across the organization through seamless integration of M365 applications, proactively monitor and tune the environment for performance and efficiency and serve as a technical escalation point for advanced troubleshooting and vendor coordination. This role also lead security and compliance efforts by enforcing advanced protocols such as MFA, Conditional Access, DLP, and encryption to meet regulatory standards like GDPR, SOC 2, and NIST.

In addition, the role requires the development of technical documentation, automation of recurring administrative tasks using tools like PowerShell or Power Automate, and proactive engagement with business and IT stakeholders to align M365 strategies with organizational needs. The Systems Engineer is expected to champion the adoption of new Microsoft 365 tools and features, support roadmap planning and budgeting efforts, and ensure successful audits and compliance outcomes.

This role demands a unique combination of deep technical knowledge, strong problem-solving skills, collaborative mindset, and the ability to translate complex IT solutions into business value.

Performance Outcomes

Microsoft 365 Administration & Engineering

  • Lead the design, configuration, and maintenance of M365 services, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Entra ID, Microsoft Purview, and Intune.

  • Manage hybrid environments and cloud-only solutions to ensure high availability, performance, and seamless user experiences.

  • Drive adoption of new M365 tools, features, and services in alignment with business needs.

Security, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Implement and maintain advanced security protocols such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, encryption, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), and insider risk policies.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards such as GDPR, SOC 2, and NIST.

  • Support internal and external audits through documentation and control validation.

Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Serve as the Tier 3 escalation point for complex M365-related issues.

  • Act as the primary contact with Microsoft support for incident resolution.

  • Analyze and resolve service disruptions or performance issues in a timely manner.

Monitoring, Optimization & Automation

  • Monitor system performance and service availability using tools such as Endpoint Analytics.

  • Plan for capacity, identify improvement opportunities, and implement performance optimizations.

  • Automate administrative tasks and workflows using PowerShell, Power Automate, or Ansible to improve efficiency and reliability.

Collaboration, Integration & Documentation

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate M365 services with third-party platforms and business applications.

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and user guides.

  • Provide training and guidance to stakeholders on best practices and system usage.

Education, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field required; equivalent experience may be considered required.

  • Advanced certifications in Microsoft technologies preferred.

  • Extensive hands-on experience administering and engineering Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Purview.

  • Deep understanding of identity and access management (IAM), Conditional Access, data loss prevention (DLP), encryption, eDiscovery, retention policies, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, SOC 2, NIST).

  • 5–7 years of experience managing Microsoft environments in mid- to large-scale enterprise settings, including hybrid cloud/on-premises Active Directory environmentsrequired.

  • Proficiency in PowerShell required; experience with additional tools such as Power Automate or Ansible strongly preferred.

  • Experience with third-party management tools (e.g., BitTitan, Quest), security platforms (e.g., CrowdStrike, SumoLogic), and project management tools (e.g., Jira) is a plus.

  • Relevant Microsoft certifications such as Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert, Security Administrator Associate, or Modern Desktop Administrator Associate.
