Participatory Budgeting Project

The Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP) is a nonprofit organization that empowers people to decide together how to spend public money, primarily in the US and Canada. The organization creates and supports participatory budgeting processes that deepen democracy, build stronger communities, and make public budgets more equitable and effective. Participatory budgeting is a democratic process in which community members decide how to spend part of a public budget, giving people real power over real money.

PBP approaches its work by building real power over real money, transforming democracy, and addressing inequality. The organization develops processes that let people make real decisions beyond consultation, works to rebuild the relationship between government and the people, and prioritizes engaging underrepresented groups such as youth, people of color, and low-income people. PBP offers technical assistance including planning consultations, briefings, coaching sessions, evaluations, workshops, and activist trainings to government bodies and organizations implementing participatory budgeting processes.
