About Nova Scotia Health Authority
At Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA), we are at the forefront of transforming healthcare for the residents of Nova Scotia, Canada. Established on April 1, 2015, through the amalgamation of nine district health authorities, our mandate is to govern, manage, and deliver comprehensive health services across the province, aligning with the strategic direction set by the provincial health plan. This consolidation created a unified entity dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of Nova Scotians through a patient-centered approach and a commitment to innovation. Our operations span 45 facilities, including hospitals, health centres, and community-based programs, making us the largest employer in Nova Scotia with over 23,000 employees, 2,500 physicians, and 7,000 dedicated volunteers.
A key focus of our innovation strategy is the 'One Person One Record' (OPOR) initiative. This ambitious project, in partnership with Oracle Cerner, aims to create a single, integrated digital health information system that will replace or connect over 80 existing systems. This groundbreaking technology will provide healthcare professionals with seamless access to complete, up-to-date patient information, significantly improving communication, reducing medical errors, and enhancing patient safety. The OPOR system is designed to support a centralized booking system to reduce surgical wait times, enable paramedics to view patient health information en route to emergencies, and give primary healthcare providers easier access to patient data. Furthermore, Nova Scotia Health is collaborating with Google Cloud to integrate artificial intelligence-driven tools, such as 'Citizen Search' via the YourHealthNS app, to empower Nova Scotians with better access to health information and services. These technological advancements are pivotal in our mission to streamline healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes, and make Nova Scotia a more attractive place for healthcare professionals to work. We are also actively engaged in research and education, fostering new treatments, cures, and best practices to continually advance the quality of care.
