The National House-Building Council (NHBC) is the United Kingdom's foremost independent provider of warranty and insurance for new-build homes. Established in 1936, NHBC has been a central figure in the UK's housing sector for over eight decades, with a primary mission to elevate construction standards and protect homeowners. The organization currently provides warranties for approximately 1.5 million homes, commanding a significant market share of around 70-80% of the new home market. As a non-profit distributing company with no shareholders, NHBC is independent of both government and the construction industry, allowing it to operate with impartiality. Any profits generated are reinvested back into the business to support its core purpose of building confidence in the quality of new homes. NHBC is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by both the PRA and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for its insurance activities.

NHBC's operations are comprehensive, extending beyond just warranties. The organization is deeply involved in the entire lifecycle of a new home, from the initial design and land remediation advice to on-site inspections and post-completion support. It conducts over one million inspections annually, with a team of more than 400 inspectors and inspection managers. This rigorous approach to technical risk management aims to prevent defects from the outset. NHBC also plays a crucial role in the industry's development by providing training and quality services. It offers market-leading training programs, including NVQs and apprenticeships, to enhance the skills of the construction workforce. Furthermore, the NHBC Foundation, its research arm, conducts in-depth studies on critical issues facing the housing sector, such as climate change, modern methods of construction (MMC), and sustainability, contributing valuable insights to the industry and government. Through its 'NHBC Accepts' service, it also provides a fast-track review process for innovative construction products and systems, fostering advancements in the field.
