Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei

The story of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is one of resilience, endurance, and a steadfast commitment to ahi kā—keeping the home fires burning. It begins with the arrival of the ancestral waka, Māhuhu-ki-te-rangi, and the leadership of the tupuna Tuperiri, who established the hapū's dominance over the Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) isthmus in the 18th century. For generations, the people of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei thrived as the tangata whenua of this strategic region, cultivating the land and guarding the Waitematā Harbour.

However, the arrival of European settlers brought profound challenges. In 1840, seeking partnership and protection, the hapū invited Governor Hobson to establish the capital in Auckland, gifting 3,000 acres of land to the Crown. Despite this generosity, the following century saw the systematic erosion of their land base through confiscation and forced sales, culminating in the loss of their papakāinga at Ōkahu Bay in 1951. The struggle for justice reached a turning point in the late 1970s with the occupation of Bastion Point (Takaparawhau), a 506-day protest led by Joe Hawke that became a defining moment in Māori land rights history.

Today, following a historic Treaty of Waitangi settlement in 2012, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has emerged as a powerful post-settlement entity. Through its commercial arm, Whai Rawa, and social development arm, Whai Māia, the hapū now manages a significant asset portfolio and delivers comprehensive health, education, and housing services. What was once a struggle for survival has transformed into a thriving billion-dollar enterprise dedicated to the cultural, social, and economic advancement of its whānau, ensuring that the legacy of Tuperiri continues to flourish in the heart of Auckland.
