About the job.

We are expanding our commercial management team to support National Highways’ annual £1bn investment programme to maintain the Strategic Road Network. As part of this, we have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our team.

You will lead a team of quantity surveyors to deliver end-to-end commercial and contract management of a complex programme of schemes, each of which are valued from £1m to more than £30m. The nature and diversity of the programme ensures you will have opportunity to enhance your leadership and stakeholder management skills, together with your ability to successfully deploy your commercial skills, capabilities and experience in a complex delivery environment.

The role will be based in our Wakefield, Calder View House office, with a general expectation of office working at least 2 days per week, with the rest of the time spent working remotely.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the commercial and contract management of all schemes, ensuring all works are managed in line with the contract and all contractual matters are responded to within agreed timescales.
  • Line management of a team of quantity surveyors, commercial assistants, graduates and apprentices; providing mentoring, training and coaching to support team and personal development, including supporting those pursuing professional qualifications (e.g. MRICS).
  • Overseeing supply chain management and monthly Supply Chain Payment assessment; including enquiry documentation, quotation assessment, works order award and instructions to supply chain where required.
  • Ensure correct cost capture across all contracts through deploying Scheme Cost and value reconciliation. Support preparation of scheme forecasts and associated risk profile.
  • Site-level change management, communicating to both Client and to the supply chain, including Early Warning and Compensation Event management and production.

About you.

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or other relevant technical qualification. (This requirement may be waived for those who have secured a relevant professional qualification – see below).
  • Demonstrable experience of contract administration, ideally in a portfolio/programme setting; NEC contract experience is desirable.
  • Demonstrable experience within a Quantity Surveying/ Commercial function with evidence of providing expert advice and support on complex commercial matters, preferably in a civil engineering/infrastructure environment for either the client or contractor.
  • Demonstrable stakeholder management skills, with an ability to engage, prioritise and collaborate as an knowledgeable and effective customer.
  • Desirable - A relevant professional qualification at Chartered/Member status e.g. MRICS, MCInstCES, or equivalent.
