LIMS Systems Engineer (Contract)

POSITION DURATION: One year contract role with potential to extend or convert to FTE based on performance and business needs

The LIMS Systems Engineer will support configuration, implementation, and optimization of the LabKey LIMS platform. This role will partner with RUO operations, data engineering, and the LabKey LIMS vendor team to translate RUO workflows into system configurations, implement process improvements, support production releases, and enable reporting and automation capabilities.

This position requires strong analytical skills, prior LIMS experience, workflow documentation expertise, and the ability to work cross-functionally to ensure successful system adoption and operational efficiency.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with RUO stakeholders to review and document RUO workflows and translate them into scalable LabKey LIMS configurations

  • Configure and maintain LabKey LIMS modules, including sample tracking, metadata models, workflow states, user roles, and permissions

  • Develop process flow diagrams, functional specifications, and configuration documentation

  • Support system validation activities including user acceptance testing (UAT), acceptance demos, and release readiness

  • Collaborate with the LabKey vendor on implementation details, configuration best practices, feature enhancements, and issue resolution

  • Support production releases, change management activities, and post-release monitoring

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, workflow automation, and data standardization

  • Support integration efforts between LabKey LIMS and upstream/downstream systems, including instruments, data pipelines and reporting tools

  • Perform SQL queries, data validation checks, and basic scripting to support configuration, reporting, and automation needs

  • Troubleshoot workflow, data integrity, and configuration issues

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams including R&D, laboratory operations, data engineering, software engineering, and quality

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, computer science, bioinformatics, life sciences, or related field; or equivalent experience

  • 2+ years of experience supporting LIMS implementation, configuration, or laboratory systems

  • Experience working with LabKey LIMS or similar LIMS system strongly preferred

  • Experience in laboratory workflow mapping and system translation required

  • Experience in complaint or RUO laboratory environments preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Hands-on experience configuring LIMS platforms (LabKey strongly preferred)

  • Strong understanding of laboratory workflows, sample lifecycle management, and metadata modeling

  • Experience translating business processes into system configurations and technical specifications

  • Ability to create process flow diagrams (Visio, Lucidchart, Miro, etc.)

  • Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational database structures

  • Ability to write scripts in Python or similar languages for data validation, automation, and reporting support

  • Experience integrating laboratory instruments with LIMS platforms via APIs, file-based integrations, or middleware solutions

  • Working knowledge of RESTful APIs, JSON/XML payloads, authentication mechanisms, and data exchange standards

  • Experience supporting instrument data ingestion, transformation, validation, and automated workflow triggers

  • Familiarity with system integrations between LIMS and upstream/downstream systems (data pipelines, analytics platforms, reporting tools)

  • Experience supporting UAT, system validation, and production release cycles

  • Familiarity with 21 CFR Part 11, ALCOA+, HIPAA, and data integrity principles preferred

  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and operate in a fast-paced implementation environment

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
