The story of Modernizing Medicine, now known as ModMed, begins with a chance encounter that sparked a revolution in healthcare technology. In 2009, entrepreneur Daniel Cane, a co-founder of the successful education software company Blackboard, had a routine check-up that led him to dermatologist Dr. Michael Sherling. Frustrated by the mountain of paperwork and the analog nature of the entire patient experience, Cane struck up a conversation with Dr. Sherling about the glaring absence of efficient technology in medical practices. This dialogue between a tech visionary and a practicing physician laid the groundwork for a new venture. They realized that the existing 'one-size-fits-all' electronic health record (EHR) systems were failing to meet the specific needs of medical specialists.

Founded in 2010, ModMed was born from this shared vision to create intelligent, specialty-specific solutions that would place doctors and patients at the heart of care. What started as a focused effort to build a better EHR for dermatologists has since blossomed into a comprehensive, all-in-one cloud platform serving a wide array of specialties, including ophthalmology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, and urology. The company's unique approach involves employing practicing physicians to help program and refine the software, ensuring that the technology is not only powerful but also intuitive and aligned with real-world clinical workflows. This commitment to a physician-centric design has been a key driver of their success, allowing them to transform how healthcare information is created, consumed, and utilized. From its headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida, ModMed continues to innovate, aiming to reduce physician burnout, increase practice efficiency, and ultimately improve patient outcomes across the country.
