The Azure Storage team is chartered with building, managing, and running Persistent Cloud Storage for Microsoft Azure Cloud. Azure Storage is a Storage Platform which powers multiple storage services like Azure Data Lake Storage, Blob Storage, File Storage and Disk Storage. We are one of the foundational services in Azure Cloud. This service hosts data from some of the largest companies in the world plus supports all of Microsoft’s largest online businesses including Teams, Xbox, One Drive and Bing, and has scaled to store exabytes of customer data.

As a Senior Software Engineer in this position, you will work in the Azure Storage Performance team responsible for building features & tools to measure, analyze, and improve performance and scalability across the board for Azure Storage services. This opportunity will allow you to learn the entire Azure Storage stack, leverage existing performance analysis tools and design and implement new ones to analyze & investigate performance bottlenecks of a large-scale distributed storage system and make valuable contributions across multiple layers. The opportunity provides flexibility to work upto 100% remote from home.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders for performance benchmarking and analysis for distributed storage.
  • Drives identification of dependencies and development of design documents for performance analysis infrastructure.
  • Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience analyzing & investigating performance bottlenecks of a large-scale distributed storage system
  • 4+ years of experience in cloud backend development and operation, including performance, reliability, resilience, and scale-out.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science OR related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, OR Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Solid foundation in data structures and algorithms with debugging, and analytical skills.
  • 4+ years of experiences in designing and building large scale distributed systems.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
