Job Description

Manager, Surgical Pathology

Lead the way in advancing surgical pathology at MSK.

As Manager of Surgical Pathology, you’ll play a key role in enhancing diagnostic precision and supporting groundbreaking cancer care.

Role Overview

  • Ensure the efficient daily operation and supervision of technical employees in surgical pathology laboratories (histology, immunohistochemistry) and the morgue, ensuring quality patient care.
  • Guide and manage the functions and activities of non faculty employees in the Pathology department by communicating and ensuring compliance with institutional/departmental policies and procedures, quality standards and improvement initiatives, safety standards, and compliance with external legal regulations.
  • Hire, discipline, train, evaluate performance, and make recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Establish work schedules and priorities to ensure that workflow is controlled, meet the department's needs, and ensure delivery of quality service.
  • Develop the operating and capital budgets. Responsible for instituting and maintaining cost control measures, monitoring budget variances, and preparing monthly variance reports.
  • Assist in the recommendation/negotiations with vendors regarding the purchase/maintenance of all equipment. Evaluate and recommend the purchase of laboratory supplies, new products, and instrumentation.
  • Review/prepare documentation, reports, and records as required for the department to ensure that information is accurate and meets quality standards.
  • Maintain and improve professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of trends in patient service and protocols, and to assist in quality improvement initiatives.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory sciences or Pathologist Assistant Program required.
  • 5+ years of proven management experience required.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Histology Technician or Histology Technologist or Cytotechnologist
  • ASCP preferred

  • Communication and Collaboration: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and align stakeholders at all levels.
  • Project Management: Competence in managing multiple projects, ensuring timely and successful completion.

Additional Information

  • Location: MSK’s main hospital campus, 1275 York Avenue, Manhattan.
  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm
  • Reports to Associate Director, Surgical Pathology
