Matillion's journey began in 2011, born from a vision shared by co-founders Matthew Scullion and Ed Thompson in a rural area near Manchester, UK. In those early days, Ed focused on coding Matillion's inaugural product while Matthew laid down the company's foundational principles. This hands-on experience illuminated a critical bottleneck: the process of extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) data into cloud data warehouses was cumbersome and time-consuming. They realized that the existing tools were not optimized for the speed and scalability that cloud environments offered.

This realization sparked a pivotal moment. Matillion decided to build its own software to streamline this process, initially for internal use. The success of this internal tool was so profound that it became clear that other organizations grappling with similar data integration challenges could greatly benefit from it. Thus, in 2015, Matillion ETL was launched, marking the company's transition from a services-oriented business to a software provider. This strategic shift proved to be a turning point, propelling Matillion onto a path of rapid growth.
