C/L CAR Underwriter II

Position can be at a higher level commensurate with experience

Flexible location with ability to drive to Webster, MA for occasional training and/or meetings, based on business need

Strong Commercial Lines CAR Underwriting experience required. Demonstrates ability to exercise business judgement, effective oral and written communications, sales and negotiations skills, analytical skills, and time management within the current job assignment.

Job Summary

Effectively manages risk selection for both new and renewal business in an assigned Commercial Lines underwriting territory for Limited Service Carrier / ERP Agents. Influence overall profitability, rate adequacy and acceptability of risks being placed in CAR, while also handling some voluntary business within these assigned agents. Ability to navigate fluently through the CAR manual including bulletins which can include updated rule changes. Ability to build and maintain strong relationships through agents, Business Development Representatives and Voluntary new and renewal underwriters.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education: Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent, related experience.
Experience: 2 - 4 years - or Associates Degree equivalent plus 4 - 6 years.
Knowledge: General knowledge of industry practices, standards, and concepts within field of work. Applies them to perform work requiring analytical business skills.
Decision Making: Makes decisions related to a wide variety of situations within management limits. Interprets guidelines and procedures, applying judgment and discretion. Decisions influence portions of a project, client relationships and/or expenditures.
Supervision Received: Works independently under general supervision. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy in performing tasks.
Leadership: May provide training and guidance to less experienced staff.
Problem Solving /Operations/Direct Work Involvement: Develops solutions to a variety of problems, typically of moderate scope and complexity. Refers to and interprets policies and practices for guidance.
Client Contacts: Contacts other departments and or external organizations or parties frequently. Contacts are primarily at or below upper management levels. Represents organization on specific projects. Communication may involve persuasion, and negotiation.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Prior experience as a Commercial Lines Underwriter I or equivalent at another insurer, or underwriting services supervisor is required. Demonstrates ability to exercise business judgement, effective oral and written communications, sales and negotiations skills, analytical skills, and time management within the current job assignment.
