The Principal Software Engineer leads the design, development, and maintenance of mission-critical systems in a Salesforce and Amazon AWS GovCloud-based environment. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Salesforce capabilities, including HealthCloud, DataCloud, and Agentforce, as well as Amazon Connect for call center operations. This role requires hands-on experience integrating with the MHS GENESIS Electronic Health Record (EHR) system using FHIR and HL7 APIs, as well as external APIs using REST and SOAP protocols. The Principal Software Engineer will be responsible for implementing automated testing frameworks, ensuring system reliability, and delivering scalable solutions that meet the needs of a 24x7 service environment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with a demonstrated history of taking ownership of system performance and mission-critical service delivery, are essential for success in this role.
In addition to technical expertise, the Principal Software Engineer will play a key leadership role, guiding and mentoring a team of engineers to foster collaboration and technical excellence. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues, driving innovation, and ensuring compliance with government standards and security requirements. The ideal candidate will have a passion for delivering high-quality solutions, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop new and maintain existing functionality for an AWS and Salesforce-based environment, ensuring system reliability, scalability, and security.
  • Guide a cross-functional team through development, testing, release activities, and troubleshooting of Production issues.
  • Ensure software solutions that meet SLA requirements for a 24x7 call center operation.
  • Implement solutions using Salesforce capabilities including Apex classes, Lightning Web Components, Salesforce HealthCloud objects, and other Salesforce capabilities.
  • Provide deep Software Development expertise to guide the team in solutions that meet customer and mission goals.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab) to streamline development, testing, and Production releases.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, develop, and roll out new features, supporting agile sprint and release-level activities.
  • Mentor and guide Development, Test, and DevOps team members, sharing best practices for Salesforce development, release management, and testing.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in Production and lower environments, ensuring system health and operational continuity.
  • Provide in-depth expertise with MHS GENESIS EHR APIs (FHIR) and other external API integrations (REST and SOAP APIs).
  • Support call center integrations with Amazon Connect IVR, optimizing workflows and ensuring seamless functionality.
  • Provide technical direction and leadership, acting independently to determine methods and procedures for new assignments.
  • Provide Tier 3 support to resolve system problems and ensure mission-critical service delivery.
  • Stay updated on advancements in AWS and Salesforce technologies, recommending improvements to existing systems and processes.
  • Collaborate with government and contractor teams to build successful products and troubleshoot issues effectively.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent work experience)with 12+ years experience supporting software development across relevant systems and environments.
  • Experience with Salesforce based solutions and HealthCloud capabilities.
  • Experience with AWS GovCloud and services within AWS including Amazon Connect (IVR) and other common AWS services (VPC, S3, EC2, IAM, Cloudwatch, Cloudformation).
  • Experience with real time audio/video streams (WebRTC, SRTP) and traditional voice (PSTN) concepts in production environments (e.g. Amazon Connect, Pexip, Twilio).
  • Strong experience with an object oriented programming language (e.g. Java, C#/C++).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Strong experience with Military Healthcare EHR and related systems (e.g. MHS GENESIS or prior systems) integrations via FHIR/HL7.
  • Experience supporting cloud environments hosting software developed using Agile techniques (Scrum, Kanban) and Atlassian tools like Jira and Confluence.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in navigating electronic systems, computer programs, and virtual service platforms.

Requires a separate, quiet, private, confidential space to work from as well as having access to your own reliable high-speed internet hard wired to your home or apartment (coax or fiber from the Internet Service Provider (ISP) to your home. Using a hot spot from a mobile device (tethering) or higher latency ISP is not acceptable. Must be an U.S. citizen, speak fluent English, and able to maintain and retain suitability investigation and clearance as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Experience testing web application deployments.
  • Experience automating system tests and ensuring appropriate coverage and reporting of test results.
  • Experience with security concepts like TLS, PKI, x509, along with tools like ACAS, OWASP, SonarQube.
  • Experience supporting pipeline driven deployments leveraging CI/CD pipeline a plus (e.g. Gitlab, Jenkins). Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Veteran/military retiree and/or military spouse or Experience working with and/or for military communities.
  • Experience in or supporting a Contact Center, Military/Veteran services, or healthcare environment.
