The Department of Medicine is seeking an organized, detail-oriented Biostatistician, to work with Drs. Catherine Lesko and Todd Fojo, to help conduct longitudinal analyses on people with HIV enrolled in the Johns Hopkins HIV Clinical Cohort (JHHCC) and the Centers for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS). The CNICS is a collaborative study that includes data from the JHHCC and nine other clinical cohorts of people with HIV. Both cohorts include people with HIV engaged in routine clinical care who have consented to share their data. Data are abstracted and extracted from electronic health records, laboratory and pharmacy databases, and patient reported outcomes surveys.

This position will be filled by someone who can provide expertise on statistical design and data analyses to answer research questions using observational and longitudinal data. This position will also participate as an author on manuscripts and presentations reporting study results.

Collaboration with others on the team is critical for this position therefore, the successful applicant must be willing to work collaboratively with the JHHCC study team and with external scientific investigators interested in using these data.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Use and expand existing SAS and R programs to clean and organize incoming JHHCC and CNICS data.
  • Read concept sheets and draft statistical analysis plans specific to research objectives.
  • Analyze individual-level data to answer scientific questions of interest.
  • Prepare data tables and figures for publication and presentation at scientific meetings.
  • Contribute to technical/scientific writing and review drafts of concept sheets, reports, posters, and manuscripts, particularly descriptions of statistical methods and interpretation of results.
  • Navigate shared files and contribute to shared files to create a transparent research workspace.
  • Attend bi-weekly staff meetings and provide status updates on data processing and research projects.
  • Use professional judgment in handling sensitive information.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including investigating possible solutions and presenting them to the study team for discussion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for the preparation and presentation of results.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills in dealing with investigators and a team-oriented approach with other team members and scientific investigators.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
  • One-year related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Solid planning and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize work independently without daily direction from investigators.
  • Familiarity with survival analysis.
  • Advanced SAS programming skills.
  • Intermediate R statistical programming skills.
  • Previous experience with cleaning, merging, and analyzing large datasets is strongly desired.
  • Experience analyzing observational (as opposed to clinical trials) data desirable.
  • Interest in HIV research a plus.

Starting Salary Range: $55,200 - $96,600 Annually ($74,390 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
