We’re hiring a Junior Reporter (Food & Travel) on a 6-month contract to write about food and travel in Asia.
Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
Business Insider launched a global news bureau in Singapore in January 2021. Today, we’re a team of 11 people covering business, news, and lifestyle.
The role and team:
This person will report to our life and culture editor, and must be based in Singapore. They will be tasked with executing reporting trips within Singapore, and with reporting on the region from their desk. In this role, you’ll be tasked with pitching compelling story ideas on a daily basis. You’ll be publishing 1-2 stories a day. We want you to explore Asia’s hawker and street-food scene through a recurring series of small-business profiles, tell our readers about the hottest new travel destinations across Asia, dig into the lives of digital nomads in the region, and more. Your stories will range from 300-word news hits to 900-word profiles and photo-heavy visual features.
Examples of what success looks like on this beat include:
- At 23, she landed a job at a Michelin restaurant. 2 years later, she left to run a food stall.
- Meet the Malaysian chef who made it to the top — without any fine dining experience.
- I've been to 35 all-inclusive resorts. Here are 10 mistakes I always see first-timers make.
- An afternoon at the coffee chain that should be making Starbucks very, very nervous
- Photos show China's most surreal tourist spot — a fake Instagram-worthy town full of pretend farmers and phony fishermen
- What it’s like to live in the Svalbards, where it’s dark 4 months of the year
That’s in addition to covering any major celebrity or entertainment news that breaks in the US overnight. This is a life desk with business undertones, and we are looking to create, not follow, the news cycle. You’ll be expected to monitor social media channels for stories and pitch ideas in real time before our competitors find them.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow food and travel bloggers across the APAC region
- Talk to strangers about what they’re eating, drinking, wearing, and where they’re going
- Be familiar and passionate about all kinds of Asian cuisines. (Note that travel will be limited to within Singapore during the 6-month contract.)
The Ideal Candidate Has:
- Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great), AP style preferred
- A passion for digital storytelling
- Strong photography skills are ideal, as the position can include original photography assignments within Singapore.
- Has extensive knowledge of the best social media pages to follow for regional news
- Voracious reading habits
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
- Light HTML and/or Photoshop experience
- Solid proofreading and copyediting skills
