Objectives

The objectives of this consultancy assignment are:

  • To conduct a comprehensive analysis of institutional and other donors in the UK and continental Europe, including their strategies, priorities, interests and funding trends
  • To assess the competitive landscape and provide strategic insights to position iDE for funding opportunities in the region.

The Task

The consultant will perform the following tasks under the guidance of the leadership of the Fund Development and Programs teams.

  • Understand iDE’s mission, goal, programs and current donors and resource mobilization efforts.
  • Conduct research (online and in person) on institutional donors, corporations, foundations and individual philanthropists in the UK and Europe, including bi-laterals, multi-laterals and international organizations that provide funding for development.
  • Using the research outcome above, identify and profile potential donors and other funding sources relevant to the iDE’s mission and activities globally.
  • Identify and analyze the priorities and interests of donors, preferred funding mechanisms of potential donors, including geographic focus, thematic interests, funding priorities and funding amounts.
  • Assess the competitive landscape by identifying other organizations and initiatives competing for similar funding sources and understanding their strategies, strengths and weaknesses
  • Identify emerging trends, opportunities and challenges in the donor landscape that could inform iDE’s business development/resource mobilization strategies and approaches.
  • Explore European prime organizations with strong experience leading projects funded by EU, GIZ, FCDO, etc., including contact information for future outreach.
  • Identify and analyze potential risks and challenges associated with engaging with specific donors or funding sources, such as shifts in donor priorities, competition for limited resources, political and economic instabilities, and risks related to donor compliance and restrictions.
  • Provide recommendations based on the findings of the research and analysis, including potential strategies for engaging with potential donors and risk management plans. This includes strategy/recommendations for engaging with donors centrally in Europe as well as within country missions/embassies.
  • Develop an implementation plan outlining the steps and timeline for executing the recommended strategies, including milestones, responsible parties and resources required.

Deliverables

The consultant will produce a comprehensive report, clearly outlining the following items.

  • Donor Landscape Analysis:
    • Profile of key institutional donors, corporations, foundations and individual philanthropists in the UK and Europe that have relevance to iDE’s work
    • Analysis of donor strategies, interests, priorities and funding trends
    • Potential list of funding/partnership opportunities, challenges and risks
  • Competitive landscape assessment:
    • List of top 10 organizations competing for similar resources, highlights of their strategies, strengths and gaps
    • Profile of prime organizations along with contact information in Europe with experience leading projects funded by FCDO, EU, BMZ/GIZ, SDC, SIDA, etc
  • Risk Assessment and Management:
    • Potential risks and challenges associated with engaging specific donors or funding resources
    • Risk mitigation and management mechanisms
  • Overall Recommendations:
    • Strategies for engaging and positioning iDE for potential, current and upcoming opportunities (i.e. tailored plans to specific donors, and resources in terms of time and staffing required for the largest impact/funding)
    • Best practice in staying abreast of future and current open calls for proposals from key European donors, including obtaining early notification, navigating donor tender portals, and non-donor specific and useful platforms.
  • Implementation Plan:
    • Detailed plan of action outlining steps and timeline for implementing the recommended strategies

Requirements

  • Relevant Minimum three years (5 -7 years preferred) of experience in business development with multiple donors, with preference for experience with FCDO/DFID and European donors.
  • Excellent skills and experience in gathering and analyzing business intelligence from donors and implementing partners.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to package large amounts of information into concise and easily understandable messages.
  • Familiarity with NGOs and their ways of resource mobilization/fundraising.
  • Experience with writing winning proposals, raising funds for NGOs and entering into agreements with UK and European donors
  • Experience working with or understanding of requirements of UK and European procurement/funding mechanisms
  • Knowledge of policy changes in key UK and European donors with potential impact on official development funding.
  • Entrepreneurial and results-oriented, with experience working in fast-paced dynamic teams.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; cross-cultural communication skills required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic team and environment.
  • Team player with the ability to think strategically, understand the big picture, prioritize and work independently.
  • Computer proficiency in Google Suite, MS Office Suite is required, Salesforce experience a plus.
  • B.A/B.S in a related discipline required;
  • Fluent English required; intermediate to advanced knowledge in German, French and Italian preferred.
