Role Summary
The Newsletter & Email Marketing Associate (Volunteer) will support Huru Initiatives in strengthening its digital communication and audience engagement through structured, consistent, and high-quality email outreach. The role will focus on delivering a bi-weekly newsletter and establishing a functional email marketing system that enhances visibility, storytelling, and stakeholder engagement.
This is an ideal role for an early-career professional seeking hands-on experience in communications, digital marketing, and nonprofit engagement.
Duration & Commitment
Duration: 6 months
Time Commitment: Part-time (estimated 4–6 hours per week)
Reporting to: Outreach and External Affairs Lead
Core Functions & Responsibilities
1. Newsletter Development & Delivery
Lead the planning, drafting, design, and dissemination of a bi-weekly newsletter (12 editions over 6 months).
Develop engaging, audience-centred content, including:
Human-interest stories from the field
Program updates and impact highlights
Partner features and opportunities
Coordinate with internal team members to source content and updates.
Ensure consistency in tone, branding, and quality across all editions.
Manage newsletter scheduling, formatting, and distribution.
2. Email Marketing System Development (First 3 Months Priority)
Design and establish a functional email marketing framework, including:
Selection/setup of an email marketing platform (e.g., Mailchimp or similar)
Creation of branded templates for newsletters and campaigns
Development of segmented mailing lists (e.g., partners, donors, youth, general audience)
Build and maintain a clean and organised contact database.
Develop a simple email content calendar aligned with Huru’s activities.
3. Audience Engagement & Growth
Support the growth of Huru’s email subscriber base through:
Integration with social media and outreach campaigns
Internal coordination with programs and partnerships
Monitor engagement metrics (open rates, click rates, subscriptions).
Provide recommendations to improve reach, engagement, and retention.
4. Performance Tracking & Learning
Track and analyze performance of newsletters and campaigns.
Produce monthly insights briefs summarising:
Key metrics
Lessons learned
Suggested improvements
Contribute to refining Huru’s broader communications strategy.
Key Deliverables
By the end of the engagement, the volunteer is expected to have:
Produced and disseminated 12 high-quality bi-weekly newsletters
Developed a fully functional email marketing system (platform, templates, and segmented database) within the first 3 months
Established and maintained an active subscriber database
Delivered monthly performance reports (6 total)
Created a simple email marketing guide/manual for internal continuity
