About Genomics England
At the heart of Genomics England is a mission to enable genomic research and healthcare that benefits everyone. We are a company wholly owned by the Department of Health and Social Care, initially established in 2013 to deliver the ambitious 100,000 Genomes Project. This flagship initiative, which successfully sequenced 100,000 whole genomes from NHS patients with rare diseases and cancer by December 2018, laid the foundation for integrating genomic medicine into routine NHS care. Our culture is one of collaboration and innovation, partnering closely with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics and equipping researchers with the data and tools they need to uncover the causes of disease and develop novel treatments. Patients and participants are central to everything we do; their contributions and trust are the bedrock of our efforts to translate cutting-edge genomic science into tangible improvements in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illnesses.
Our values are rooted in ethical and transparent practices, ensuring that the vast amounts of genomic data we steward are used responsibly to drive scientific discovery and medical insights. We believe in the power of genomics to transform healthcare, making it more personalised and effective. As we move forward, we are committed to accelerating our impact, working alongside patients, doctors, scientists, government, and industry. This collaborative spirit extends to our dedicated team, who are driven by the belief that their work makes a real and lasting difference in patients' lives. We foster an environment of continuous learning and development, empowering our colleagues to tackle challenging initiatives and achieve their full potential. Our vision is a future where everyone can benefit from genomic healthcare, and we are dedicated to refining, scaling, and evolving our capabilities to make this vision a reality, ultimately aiming to improve health outcomes and kickstart the development of a thriving UK genomics industry.
