About the role

As a Senior Director, you will oversee the creative vision and execution of sponsored, original, non-fiction videos under Big Think Creative Studio. You will direct content for Bigthink.com, as well as white-label partner content. Our videos employ a mix of original footage, on-camera hosting, voice-over, motion graphics, and music to make the story come to life - and it will be up to you to make them feel fresh, engaging, and optimized for their intended audiences - as well as making sure they meet partner expectations and objectives. Expertise in our core subject areas is a huge plus: science, tech, business, health, psychology, and human interest / mission-driven storytelling.

You may also be asked to serve as a creative lead on certain partnerships, building trusted partner relationships, guiding the team through the production process, and leading on cross-platform creative strategy.

What you'll do

  • Bring fresh ideas and innovative storytelling methods to our video projects
  • Conduct pre-interviews during development
  • Write story treatments and develop mood boards and style decks
  • Direct subjects and talent during production
  • Build trust and understanding with story subjects
  • Direct editors and motion designers during post-production
  • Manage multiple ongoing video projects
  • Analyze performance data and use it to inform creative decisions
  • Build and manage relationships across the team - both internal and external
  • Collaborate with the Publishing team to integrate best practices and insights into future work.
  • Anticipate partner feedback and goals, and adjust strategy accordingly
  • Assess and respond to difficult partner feedback with a positive, solution-focused mindset

What you'll need

A talented, senior-level director who can deliver compelling, effective videos. Including long-form field documentaries, in-depth interviews and social shorts optimized for various platforms.

The right person will have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on directing of non-fiction videos, documentaries and interviews.
  • Experience in both editorial and commercial roles is preferred
  • Keen understanding of various social platforms and knowledge of what content works best on each
  • Ability to craft a rough idea into engaging, high-performing content
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Experience directing celebrity and VIP talent
  • Experience using AI image and video-generating tools
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and pitch in where needed
  • Ability to be passionate about the work without being precious. Must be discerning in how/where you focus your efforts for maximum impact
  • Openness to feedback and challenge
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed for special event programming.
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time, often with short notice

What began in 2011 as a boutique creative agency with a simple yet powerful belief in the power of storytelling has blossomed into Freethink, a dynamic media company dedicated to showcasing a better future. Founded by Chandler Tuttle, Dan Hayes, and Kmele Foster, the journey started with a small team and a conviction that the most important stories of our time—those of innovation, progress, and human ingenuity—were not being told. They embarked on a mission to change the narrative, moving away from the negativity and toxic politics that often dominate the media landscape. Their focus was clear: to shine a light on the smartest people, the biggest ideas, and the most groundbreaking technologies that are actively shaping our world for the better. This foundational commitment to quality filmmaking and compelling narratives quickly resonated, allowing them to collaborate with remarkable organizations and bring impactful stories to life.

Over the years, Freethink has evolved from its agency roots into a full-fledged media publisher, reaching millions across the globe. Their content, which spans documentary films, articles, and various series, explores the frontiers of science and society. From pioneers developing exoskeleton suits and gene therapy to innovators building the first factories in space, Freethink consistently introduces its audience to the change-makers solving humanity's biggest challenges. The company's core teams in New York City, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles are now supported by a global network of talented journalists, filmmakers, and creators. This expansion includes the acquisition and integration of Big Think, a platform dedicated to exploring the world's biggest ideas with the world's biggest thinkers. Through it all, Freethink has remained steadfast in its original purpose: to inspire people to build a better world by telling the stories of those who are already doing it, proving that believing in the next solution is not blind optimism, but a recognition of our innate capacity to solve problems.
