What began in a garage in 1981, the brainchild of two PhD students, Simon Raab and Greg Frasier, has evolved into FARO Technologies, a global leader in 3D measurement, imaging, and realization technology. Initially named Res-Tech and focused on orthopedic applications, the company soon recognized a broader potential for its innovative articulated measurement arm technology. The pivotal shift occurred in 1992 when FARO refocused its efforts on the manufacturing and industrial sectors, a move that coincided with its reincorporation in Florida. This strategic redirection phased out direct medical product sales, licensing its groundbreaking technology to major neurosurgical companies, where it became a standard in neurosurgery worldwide.

The company, whose name 'FARO' is derived from the ancient Greek word 'pharos' meaning lighthouse, aimed to be a guiding beacon for industries seeking precision and efficiency. A significant milestone was its initial public offering in 1997, which fueled further growth and acquisitions, including CATS GmbH in 1998 and SpatialMetrix Corp. in 2002.
