About the Role

As a Data Engineering Manager at Envato, you'll play a key role in leading and growing our Data Engineering team while driving the development of a brand-new, greenfield data platform. This is an opportunity to build a modern data ecosystem from the ground up while also maintaining and gradually transitioning away from our legacy platform.
You'll be responsible for setting direction, prioritizing work, and fostering collaboration across teams, ensuring the data platform evolves to support business needs. Your focus will be on empowering and supporting engineers, managing resources, and driving technical excellence—rather than just individual contribution. If you're excited about leading a team through a major transformation and shaping the future of data at Envato, this role is for you.

What you'll be doing

  • Empower, mentor, and develop a data focused team, ensuring they perform at their best.
  • Organise team work, set clear goals, and ensure accountability to successfully deliver data engineering projects.
  • Lead the build of a modern, scalable data platform from scratch while maintaining and gradually decommissioning the legacy system.
  • Oversee the transition to AWS, leveraging Redshift, Snowflake, and DBT Cloud or Core for data transformation.
  • Work closely with analytics, product, and business teams to define priorities, ensure alignment, and deliver value.
  • Take ownership of platform availability, performance, and security, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Continuously refine engineering practices, streamline workflows, and enhance predictability in project execution.
  • Promote data engineering excellence, including well-structured DBT models, scalable data pipelines, and robust governance.
  • Keep the team up to date with emerging technologies, encourage experimentation, and support professional growth.
  • Partner with senior leadership on technical strategy, budgets, resource planning, and long-term roadmap development.

About you

  • Experienced people leader with a strong track record of mentoring, coaching, and developing high-performing data engineering teams.
  • Previously worked as a Data Engineer and has hands-on experience in building and optimizing data platforms.
  • Proven ability to lead and scale data teams, ensuring smooth operations and continuous delivery of high-quality work.
  • Strong delivery focus, effectively managing priorities, aligning resources, and driving successful project execution.
  • Expertise in cloud migration and replatforming, particularly within AWS environments.
  • Deep technical knowledge of Redshift, Snowflake, and DBT (Cloud or Core) for data transformation and modeling.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, fostering collaboration across business teams and ensuring alignment with company goals.
  • Adaptable and proactive leader who embraces change, drives continuous improvement, and empowers teams to succeed.
