Cool Earth

Cool Earth is an international NGO dedicated to protecting the rainforest and combating climate change by supporting Indigenous communities and local populations. Founded in 2007 by Johan Eliasch and Frank Field, the organization operates on the belief that the most effective custodians of rainforests are the communities that have lived in harmony with these ecosystems for generations. By providing significant financial backing through cash transfers and resources, Cool Earth empowers these communities to monitor and protect their land from deforestation and other threats.

One of the key elements of Cool Earth’s strategy is its partnerships with Indigenous communities in critical rainforest regions, such as the Amazon and Papua New Guinea. Through these partnerships, Cool Earth enables communities to develop sustainable livelihoods and overcome poverty, which are pivotal for rainforest conservation. The charity has made considerable impacts, including securing over 100,000 hectares of rainforest, storing millions of tonnes of carbon, and supporting numerous biodiversity projects. With a focus on local economies, forest data, and cash transfers, Cool Earth is at the forefront of innovative conservation efforts that prioritize the voices of those most affected by environmental changes.
