CIPE

The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) embarked on its journey in 1983, born from a conviction that economic freedom and political freedom are inextricably linked. Established as a non-profit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a core institute of the National Endowment for Democracy, CIPE's story began with a pioneering mission: to strengthen democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market-oriented reform. The organization's founders believed that a thriving democracy requires a robust private sector to flourish, and conversely, a dynamic private sector needs the stability and fairness of democratic institutions to reach its full potential. This foundational principle has guided CIPE through more than four decades of impactful work across the globe.

From its initial efforts in Latin America, which focused on integrating small, informal businesses into the formal economy and providing leadership training, CIPE's reach has expanded dramatically. Over the years, it has initiated more than 3,000 projects in over 130 countries, adapting its strategies to the unique political and economic landscapes of each region. Whether it's leading anti-corruption initiatives, training entrepreneurs, empowering women in business, or helping local business associations and chambers of commerce find their voice in policy debates, CIPE has remained on the front lines. Its journey has been one of collaboration, working hand-in-hand with local partners to build the essential institutions—from transparent governance to the rule of law—that create an enabling environment for business and entrepreneurship to thrive. Through these dedicated partnerships, CIPE continues to champion the idea that a vibrant private sector is a cornerstone of a resilient and prosperous democratic society.
