About Brown University
We are a leading nonprofit research university, distinct for our student-centered learning and deep sense of purpose. Our students, faculty and staff are driven by the idea that their work will have an impact in the world. Founded in 1764, we are home to world-renowned faculty, and also an innovative educational institution where the curiosity, creativity and intellectual joy of students drives academic excellence. The spirit of our undergraduate Open Curriculum infuses every aspect of the University. This means that our academic excellence is rooted in a student-centered model of learning. The Open Curriculum is a flexible but rigorous approach to education that pushes students to be creative thinkers, intellectual risk-takers and entrepreneurial problem-solvers. Our undergraduates enjoy the freedom to study what they choose and the flexibility to discover what they love. Students leave Brown prepared to thrive as independent, innovative leaders, no matter what path they choose.
We are a place where rigorous scholarship, complex problem-solving and service to the public good are defined by intense collaboration, intellectual discovery and working in ways that transcend traditional boundaries. As a private, nonprofit institution, we advance our mission through support from a community invested in Brown's commitment to advance knowledge and make a positive difference locally and globally. Providence, Rhode Island — our home for more than two and a half centuries — is a vibrant place to live, work and study, a stimulating hub for innovation, and a city rich in cultural diversity. Our main campus is in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence. We are the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the US. Originally founded as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, we were the first US college to codify that admission and instruction of students was to be equal regardless of the religious affiliation of students. Our vibrant, diverse community consists of about 7,200 undergraduate students, 2,000 graduate students, 490 medical school students, and over 700 faculty members. Our students come from all 50 states and more than 115 countries.
