About Bon Secours
The story of Bon Secours Mercy Health is a narrative of compassionate care and strategic unification, rooted in a rich heritage that dates back to the 19th century. The journey began with three distinct congregations of women religious: the Sisters of Bon Secours, the Sisters of Mercy, and the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. The Sisters of Bon Secours arrived in the United States from France in 1881, establishing a healthcare ministry in Baltimore, Maryland, that would grow from home health and public services to its first hospital in 1919. Similarly, the Sisters of Mercy came from Ireland, dedicating themselves to caring for the sick and vulnerable by building numerous schools and hospitals across the United States. These separate, faith-driven missions laid a profound groundwork of service, compassion, and a commitment to caring for the poor and underserved.
For decades, these organizations grew independently, expanding their reach and impact. Bon Secours Health System, based in Marriottsville, Maryland, and Mercy Health, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, each became formidable healthcare providers in their own right. Recognizing a shared vision and the potential for greater impact in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the two systems embarked on a new chapter. In September 2018, they merged to form Bon Secours Mercy Health. This strategic union created one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States, combining their strengths to enhance the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of care. Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, the integrated ministry now operates over 50 hospitals and more than 1,200 care sites across seven U.S. states and Ireland, powered by a dedicated team of over 60,000 associates. This modern entity continues to be guided by the foundational calling of its founding sisters: to extend compassionate ministry and bring good help to those in need.
