As the Senior Director, Enterprise Data, you will both contribute and lead a team of data engineers and analysts with a strategic business perspective to drive innovation and data-driven decisions across the company. This strategic leadership role requires a seasoned professional with a strong and proven background of leading by example in both technical and business domains.

In this role you will partner with business leaders to design for scale and guide technical teams to design, build and maintain company wide KPIs, critical data elements and Financial and GTM business insights that are critical to our data-driven decisions. Drawing on deep experience in data warehousing, business intelligence and data governance coupled with business savvy and a consultative demeanor, this person will lead teams to bridge the gap between the business strategy, operational processes, data architecture, and enterprise business systems.

Equally comfortable with business problem statements and technical specifications, this individual will work closely with executive leaders playing a critical role in shaping the future of BigC’s data strategy within and outside of the team.

You will advocate for standardization across the Data platforms, Business Applications, Enterprise Integration Platform and gain expertise in BigC’s operational, revenue, & financial data. Leading a group of highly-skilled data engineers, architects and governance professionals, this leader will demystify data and be focused primarily on effectively driving change throughout the organization.

What You’ll Do

Reporting to the Senior Director, Data Strategy within the Operations & Data organization, you will initially play a critical data leadership role in a project to transform BigCs back office accounting systems. You will collaborate with a diverse team of functional leaders and direct data varied data resources as we continue to grow BigCommerce’s ability to improve business decision-making and grow revenue via scalable data practices.

  • Absorb, simplify and articulate business concepts that translate into technical data products as a key to success in this role
  • Lead the data architecture, design and execution on a highly visible project to transform BigC’s back office accounting systems
  • Lead leaders of diverse technical teams across data engineering, architecture & design and quality assurance
  • Guide Data Solutions teams to architect data structures and oversee the ELTs to develop meaningful, high-quality data to downstream users and platforms
  • Set an exceptionally high bar for the Analytics and Insights teams to not only build insightful visualization but deliver business value through change management opportunity identification
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in dimensional data modeling and an in-depth understanding of data warehousing concepts
  • Recruit, lead, manage, motivate, and coach high potential leaders to maximize their individual potential plus extended team contributions, prioritization and professional growth
  • In collaboration with the Data Technical Program Manager, ensure capacity and throughput metrics are monitored with controls in place such that direct reports are able to lead the day-to-day operations of their teams to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability and identify risks or gaps in the org design quickly
  • Reduce barriers to effective collaboration across the company to guarantee that data will enable measurement of the organization’s KPIs, and ensure business processes are mapped to optimal architecture and insights, and more
  • Engage with data consumers throughout the organization to understand common data requests and key metrics. Raise the bar for teams to define and document the underlying metrics and design robust infrastructure (ETLs, table structures, metadata) to enable consistent reporting on those metrics throughout the organization

  • 15+ years of technical experience in a role requiring deep consultation with business and technical stakeholder collaboration (Analytics, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Data Warehousing, Data Architecture and Strategy, Consulting, or Product Management)
  • 7+ years of leader management experience with proven ability to groom high performing leaders and teams
  • Bachelor’s degree or similar work experience in a technical discipline (information science, mathematics, computer science, econometrics, etc)
  • Simplifier and executive influencer who utilizes exceptional storytelling skills to drive change through written, verbal, and presentation tactics
  • Cross-functional leader with indirect influence finesse and excellent stakeholder management; inspires confidence and collaboration across departmental boundaries
  • Mindset of a consultant and/or a strategist, constantly questioning whether there’s a better way or a higher value to achieve for the business
  • Well-versed in the tradeoffs of different data storage approaches (row-oriented vs columnar, relational vs. non-relational, structured vs. unstructured)
  • Deep knowledge of cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Redshift or similar) , visualization tools (Tableau, Looker, PowerBI or similar) and building data pipelines
  • Experience building logical and physical data models
  • Expert SQL skills in both DDL and DML, plus experience in a scripting language like Python
  • Familiarity with one or more data warehouse platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery or similar
  • Familiarity with one or more Cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, GCP
  • Proven ability to translate business concepts into data models that power meaningful data insights
