This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include:
- Assisting Stormwater Management (SWM) Inspectors during various types of inspections throughout all phases of construction and related activities for assigned private development projects, as well as various County development projects to ensure regulatory compliance;
- Completing detailed inspection reports, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in documentation, and helping keep the records in compliance with SWM regulations;
- Supporting inspectors with tracking project statuses, including tracking enforcement action items, due or overdue inspections, permit expirations in ComplianceGo inspection software, Excel, or other related software systems;
- Independently managing overall project data and permit records in support of the ComplianceGo Stormwater Inspection Software while collaborating with permitting staff and inspectors to ensure information is kept updated and accurate;
- Verifying accuracy of list of newly issued Land Disturbing Permits in the County on a monthly basis by cross checking with various data management software and submitting verified lists to VDEQ to maintain departmental compliance with state laws and regulations;
- Conducting comprehensive research on regulatory changes, specifically the consolidation of Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Management regulations, the new DEQ Stormwater Management Handbook, a new Virginia Runoff Reduction Method (VRRM) spreadsheet, and a new 2024 Construction General Permit, analyzing these changes against current Arlington County codes and practices to recommend updates to inspection reports, SWPPP templates, and other forms;
- Attending and accurately taking minutes at various meetings, maintaining a comprehensive record of meeting topics, key takeaways, and action items, regularly updating and organizing these records for easy reference and follow-up by team members and supervisor;
- Running monthly reports in Microsoft Access Database on analytics for plan submissions to the stormwater review time, assisting SWM team lead with updating content of monthly reports to more effectively track analytics, compiling the analytics into an Excel table for team reference; and
- Assisting the inspection and review team with drafting standard documents/forms to include creating templates while working with team members and supervisors to develop documents for new and existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) involving documenting various workflows and processes to ensure consistency and compliance with regulations.

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.
Internship
Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

- This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.
- Interns are also expected to participate in both in-office work assignments as well as a member of the in-person training cohort.
Minimum:
Recent, 2024 and/or 2025 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to September 2025 must have:
- No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
- Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.
Note: Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.
Degree Requirements: Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sustainability Management or related discipline. Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than September 2025 and from candidates who are recently graduated or currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field as described above.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;
- Experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, GIS, and other related and similar technological software tools; and/or
- Worked with large datasets before and understand basic concepts like sorting, filtering, formatting etc.
Special Requirements
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver’s License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Additional Information
Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm with some flexibility and telework opportunities available upon prior approval from the supervisor. This is not a fully remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
