AZRA is a specialty niche reinsurer, domiciled in California and licensed as an admitted insurer in 36 states (including District of Columbia), and is a qualified, accredited, or approved reinsurer in fifteen states. AZRA is a property casualty reinsurer which writes both prospective and legacy reinsurance. AZRA has specific expertise in run-off management of U.S. legacy insurance liabilities. It services Allianz Group affiliates and third parties including third party claims administration of asbestos, environmental, workers compensation, general liability, and construction defect liabilities.

AZRA has approximately 150 employees located nationwide with the majority working on a remote basis.

The Reinsurance Portfolio Senior Director plays a key leadership role in the prospective reinsurance business at AZRA. Leading a team, this role is provides input to the development of the portfolio strategy and is accountable for oversite of the portfolio mix. This leader will develop and manage the underwriting standards, guidelines and practice for the organization, conduct all underwriting reviews and lead response to audits. This role also serves as the primary point of contact for 3rd party and internal retrocessional reinsurance clients as well as global line partners and stakeholders.

What you do:

  • Portfolio Management:
    ▪ Accountable for oversite of the portfolio mix; provide input to the strategy, mix and appetite for the portfolio based on changing market conditions and organizational priorities
    ▪ Serve as the primary liaison for 3rd party and internal retrocessional reinsurance clients
    ▪ Build and maintain close partnership with AZRe Head of Middle Markets and other global line partners and stakeholders
  • Governance & Oversite:
    ▪ Develop and manage organizational underwriting standards, guidelines and practice working in close partnership with legal and other internal partners
    ▪ Manage the process for legacy transactions
    ▪ Conduct underwriting reviews; point person for audits and inquiries
    ▪ Support development and refinement of contract language
  • Team Leadership:
    ▪ Directly manage a team comprised of underwriters and analysts; foster a strong, engaged team culture
    ▪ Set clear annual targets, proactively focusing on skill development to keep self and team current with industry and emerging trends
    ▪ Provide guidance and direction across related functions; may lead department and cross functional projects and initiatives as needed

What you bring:

  • 8-10 years of experience required
  • Strong background in underwriting with demonstrated knowledge of governance and standards best practices.
  • Experience developing and/or managing third party reinsurance contracts and books of business.
  • Four-year degree required in Actuarial Sciences, Finance, Legal, Business or related; or equivalent work experience.

Base Salary Range $190,000 - $230,000

Actual base salary may vary based upon factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity of peers, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual incentive program.

Job may require periods of stooping, bending, sitting or standing. Domestic and/or international travel up to 40% may occur as dictated by local/global needs.
