The story of AFL began in 1984, born from a strategic joint venture between two industry giants: the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) and Fujikura Ltd. of Japan. Originally established as Alcoa Fujikura Ltd., the company set out with a singular focus on manufacturing fiber optic ground wire (OPGW) to serve the electric utility industry. From these humble beginnings in a facility in Duncan, South Carolina, the company embarked on a journey of rapid expansion and technological innovation that would eventually position it as a global leader in the telecommunications and energy sectors.

A pivotal moment in the company's history arrived in 2005 when Fujikura Ltd. assumed 100% ownership, integrating AFL fully into its global network while retaining the company's headquarters in South Carolina. This transition catalyzed a new era of growth, allowing AFL to diversify its portfolio significantly. Today, the company has evolved far beyond its original product line, offering an extensive array of end-to-end solutions that include fiber optic cables, transmission and substation accessories, outside plant equipment, and advanced test and inspection gear.
