About 350.org
350.org was founded in 2008 by a group of university friends in the U.S. along with author Bill McKibben, who wrote one of the first books on global warming for the general public. The organization recognized that to address a challenge as vast as climate change, a global social movement was essential. The name '350' signifies 350 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide (CO2), identified by scientists as the safe upper limit in the atmosphere to prevent a climate tipping point. However, by the time 350.org was established, this threshold had already been surpassed. This reality fuels the organization's urgency and commitment to action. Our customers, the global community and future generations, face the escalating impacts of the climate crisis – from extreme weather events to threats to livelihoods and ecosystems. This is why 350.org is dedicated to ending the use of fossil fuels and facilitating a just transition to renewable energy.
We empower individuals and communities worldwide to demand climate action from their leaders and institutions. Through online campaigns, grassroots organizing, mass public actions, and collaborations with a vast network of partner groups, 350.org has mobilized thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries. Our work focuses on dismantling the influence and infrastructure of the fossil fuel industry while simultaneously advocating for and supporting the development of community-led renewable energy solutions. We understand that the climate crisis is an issue of power and justice, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities who have contributed the least to the problem. Therefore, our campaigns aim to not only keep carbon in the ground by opposing new fossil fuel projects like coal plants and pipelines but also to ensure that the transition to a green economy is equitable and benefits everyone, especially those on the frontlines. We strive to provide the tools, training, and support necessary for people to build resilient communities powered by clean energy, creating local jobs and fostering economic benefits. Our ultimate goal is to create a world where communities can thrive, safe from the impacts of climate change, and where energy is a resource that empowers all, not just a privileged few.
