Michael Long
@michaellong1
I build predictive analytics, automated pipelines, and executive dashboards from complex health and mobility data.
What I'm looking for
I'm currently building predictive triage systems at the University of Sheffield and NHS, using high-dimensional intake data to identify drivers of disengagement and route high-risk users toward intervention pathways.
I develop validated Python workflows with Elastic Net classification, Youden's J thresholding, MissForest imputation, and spatial cross-validation. I also translate statistical outputs into operational Power BI and Tableau reporting for non-technical leadership.
Previously, I led a European Mobilise-D Consortium task evaluating Digital Mobility Outcomes across Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, COPD, and hip-fracture cohorts. I coordinated an eight-person international team and delivered supervised and unsupervised machine-learning work for MS disease-progression prediction.
My work also spans UK food-system policy research at the University of Nottingham and AR algorithm development for Jaguar Land Rover vehicle head-up displays. I bring a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience with Engineering and more than 10 years of quantitative research and analytics experience.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Lead Data Analyst / Quantitative Scientist
University of Sheffield/NHS
Nov 2025 - Present (11 months)
Automated predictive triage using Elastic Net classification on high-dimensional intake data. Developed interactive Power BI and Tableau reporting frameworks for executive stakeholders.
Senior Analytics Lead & Task Manager
University of Sheffield / EU Mobilise-D Consortium
Dec 2021 - Oct 2025 (3 years 10 months)
Led a task within a four-task work package coordinating an 8-person team across Europe. Executed machine learning models for MS cohort to classify and predict disease progression.
Research Associate & Policy Lead
University of Nottingham
Apr 2019 - Nov 2019 (7 months)
Led a multidisciplinary research team to author a high-level policy report on sustainable food systems submitted to the UK Government. Synthesized findings from microbiology, chemical engineering, and sociology into policy recommendations.
Developed and validated a novel 3D Augmented Reality depth-conveying algorithm for vehicle head-up displays. Collaborated with senior engineering teams to align technical outputs with driver perception and safety.
