Jonathan Chu
@jonathanchu
Senior Voice and Clinical Communications Engineer, building resilient real-time platforms with automation, observability, and root-cause discipline.
What I'm looking for
I’m a Senior Voice and Clinical Communications Engineer with 10 years of experience designing and modernizing real-time communication platforms across SIP, unified communications, and resilient backend services. I focus on automation for deployment and recovery, model failure modes, and use data and metrics to guide prioritization, root-cause analysis, and service architecture decisions.
At Niantic, I shipped remote-first systems supporting large-scale, low-latency, n-tier applications. I improved reliability through observability and incident response—owning service health dashboards in Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog—then turned incident trends and SLO breaches into backlog priorities for engineering teams.
I build durable platforms by partnering with engineering teams to translate customer needs into service architecture changes. I refined alert thresholds and runbooks to reduce paging noise, drove root-cause analysis on production regressions across APIs, databases, and network dependencies, and sequenced reliability fixes ahead of feature work when data showed elevated error rates or latency risk.
I bring the same operating discipline to clinical communications, contact center, paging, and high-availability services. From automated deployment and recovery workflows that reduced manual rollback steps from 12 to 3, to game-day simulations that validate resilience before releases, I help teams make recovery decisions documented and repeatable.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Senior Voice & Clinical Engineer
Niantic Spatial, Inc
May 2025 - Present (1 year 1 month)
Designed automated deployment and recovery workflows for n-tier services, cutting manual rollback steps from 12 to 3 and reducing restart time to under 10 minutes. Owned reliability dashboards and incident-driven prioritization, partnering on architecture changes (queue isolation, retry tuning, circuit breakers) to reduce paging noise and close recurring incidents.
Senior Voice & Clinical Engineer
Niantic, Inc
Sep 2022 - May 2025 (2 years 8 months)
Modernized n-tier application flows for real-time multiplayer systems, improving availability during peak traffic and stabilizing key request paths at scale. Automated deployment checks and rollback gates with Jenkins and GitHub Actions, simulated outage scenarios for failure isolation, and used Datadog/Splunk metrics to prioritize and resolve latency and reliability regressions.
Backend Software Engineer
Niantic, Inc
Jun 2021 - Sep 2022 (1 year 3 months)
Built backend features for distributed services in Java, C#, and Python with clear service contracts and predictable failure handling. Implemented automated recovery scripts for deployment/maintenance, instrumented services with Prometheus/Grafana/Splunk to accelerate debugging, and improved PostgreSQL/Redis queries to reduce hot-path load and downstream pressure.
Software Engineer (Backend)
AI Foundation
Feb 2018 - Feb 2021 (3 years)
Developed backend services and APIs for AI-driven products using Python, JavaScript, and Node.js with PostgreSQL and MongoDB for data-intensive workflows. Automated deployment and environment setup with Docker/Jenkins and built monitoring with ELK Stack and Datadog to improve investigation across metrics and logs.
Full-Stack Software Engineer
Originate
May 2016 - Jan 2018 (1 year 8 months)
Delivered full-stack features using JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Node.js, building reliable service endpoints and user-facing workflows. Integrated REST and GraphQL APIs with PostgreSQL/Redis, and created Linux/Docker deployment and environment scripts to reduce setup time and improve cross-team handoffs.
