Pablo Galán de Anta
@gdapablo
Data scientist with a Ph.D. in Physics focused on astrophysics and predictive modeling.
What I'm looking for
I am a data scientist with a Ph.D. in Physics specialising in extragalactic astrophysics and predictive modelling, combining five-plus years of Python development with experience analysing multi-terabyte scientific datasets. My research produced up to nine peer-reviewed papers (h-index 4) and I have built and optimised Python codes for galaxy modelling and 3D spectroscopic analysis.
I have operational experience supporting major observatory facilities, including telescope operations and observing support, and I developed machine learning models (DNNs) for operational forecasting with reported MSE = 0.012 and R = 0.72. I am practiced in collaborating across institutions, presenting seminars, and communicating technical results to research communities.
I seek to translate complex data into decision-ready insights using robust validation, clear visualization, and reproducible code, bringing strengths in coding, data analysis, machine learning, and domain expertise in astrophysics to applied data problems.

Observing Support Assistant
Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes
Jan 2024 - May 2025 (1 year 4 months)
Provided support in utilising the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) for cutting-edge research. Key responsibilities:
1- Operated the WHT, including dome opening and observing schedules based on weather conditions.
2- Addressed and resolved technical issues during observations to minimize downtime.
3- Forecast seeing prediction modeling with DDNs (MSE=0.012, R2=0.72) and time series.
Pre-doctoral researcher
Queen's University Belfast
Oct 2018 - Jul 2023 (4 years 9 months)
Conducted extragalactic physics research resulting in nine peer-reviewed papers (h-index 4) and developed Python codes for galaxy modelling and spectroscopic 3D data analysis.
Support Astronomer
Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes
Sep 2021 - Sep 2022 (1 year)
Providing essential assistance in utilising the 2.54-m Isaac Newton telescope effectively for research. Key responsabilities:
1. Observing Support: helped astronomers plan and execute their observations using the INT.
2. Data Reduction and Analysis: Supporting astronomers with data reduction and analysis.
3. Troubleshooting: Addressing technical issues and challenges during observations.
