Role Overview
As a Principal Research Archaeologist, you will lead groundbreaking archaeological research initiatives, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to drive the exploration and preservation of cultural heritage. This role requires a deep understanding of archaeological methodologies, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to synthesize complex data into actionable insights that inform both academic and public discourse.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement comprehensive archaeological research projects, focusing on innovative methodologies and techniques
- Oversee fieldwork, including excavation and survey operations, ensuring adherence to ethical practices and archaeological standards
- Conduct thorough analysis of artifacts, ecofacts, and other archaeological materials, utilizing advanced statistical and computational methods
- Collaborate with cultural institutions, governmental agencies, and local communities to promote public archaeology initiatives and stakeholder engagement
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences to disseminate knowledge and advance the field
- Mentor junior archaeologists and field technicians, fostering a culture of professional development and collaborative learning
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field with a focus on research
- 10+ years of experience in archaeological research, including significant fieldwork and project management
- Proven track record of publishing research findings in respected academic journals
- Strong understanding of archaeological theories, methods, and current trends
Preferred:
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies
- Familiarity with community-engaged archaeology and public outreach practices
- Cross-disciplinary experience in related fields such as history, conservation, or environmental science
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in archaeological software and tools, including GIS applications, database management, and statistical analysis software
- Proficient in the use of digital documentation and recording technologies, including 3D modeling and drone surveying
- Knowledge of laboratory techniques for artifact analysis and conservation practices
