Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Lead Mitochondrial Disorders Counselor to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert counseling and support to patients and families affected by mitochondrial disorders, guiding them through the complexities of diagnosis, treatment options, and emotional challenges. Your leadership will be instrumental in shaping our counseling protocols and enhancing the quality of care we provide.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients and families affected by mitochondrial disorders to identify needs and develop personalized care plans.
- Provide ongoing counseling and support, helping patients and their families navigate the emotional and psychological aspects of living with mitochondrial diseases.
- Lead educational initiatives for patients, families, and healthcare professionals to improve understanding of mitochondrial disorders and available resources.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including geneticists, neurologists, and other specialists, to ensure integrated patient care.
- Stay abreast of the latest research and advancements in mitochondrial disorders to provide evidence-based counseling and resources.
- Supervise and mentor junior counselors, fostering a culture of professional growth and continuous improvement within the team.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience providing counseling to patients with chronic conditions, with a focus on genetic or mitochondrial disorders.
- Strong understanding of mitochondrial biology and related health implications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to connect with diverse patient populations.
Preferred:
- Certification from a recognized counseling or genetic counseling body.
- Experience in developing and delivering educational programs for healthcare professionals.
- Publication or presentation experience related to mitochondrial disorders.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation and patient management.
- Familiarity with telehealth platforms and remote counseling tools.
- Experience with data collection and analysis methodologies for patient outcome tracking.
