Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Conservation Technician to join our dedicated team focused on preserving and protecting valuable artifacts and collections. In this role, you will lead projects aimed at the conservation of a wide range of materials, applying advanced techniques and methodologies to ensure their longevity and integrity.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and execute conservation projects, ensuring adherence to best practices and ethical standards in the field.
- Develop and implement conservation treatment plans for a variety of materials including paper, textiles, and ceramics.
- Conduct detailed assessments of artifacts to determine their condition and necessary conservation actions.
- Collaborate with curators, collections managers, and other stakeholders to prioritize conservation needs and projects.
- Maintain accurate records of conservation treatments and provide reports to stakeholders on project progress and outcomes.
- Train and mentor junior technicians and interns in conservation techniques and best practices.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in conservation science and technology to continually improve methodologies.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Conservation, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in conservation, specifically with hands-on treatment of artifacts.
- Strong understanding of materials science as it relates to conservation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects and manage multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred:
- Advanced degree in Conservation or a related discipline.
- Experience with preventive conservation strategies and environmental monitoring.
- Familiarity with digital documentation and imaging techniques for conservation.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in various conservation techniques, including cleaning, repairing, and stabilizing artifacts.
- Experience with analytical techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and material analysis.
- Familiarity with conservation management software and database systems.
