Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and innovative Assistant Professor of Cartography to join our academic community. As an integral member of our faculty, you will leverage your expertise in cartography to educate and inspire the next generation of geographers, while also contributing to cutting-edge research in the field.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and related subjects, fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
- Develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies and assessment strategies that enhance student learning outcomes.
- Conduct high-quality research in cartography, producing publications in reputable journals and presenting findings at national and international conferences.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on research projects that push the boundaries of traditional cartographic practices.
- Mentor and advise students on academic and professional development, guiding them through their research projects and career paths.
- Contribute to departmental service activities, including curriculum development, committee participation, and community outreach initiatives.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Ph.D. in Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Science, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in cartographic principles and methods, including both traditional and digital cartography.
- Proven record of scholarly research and publication in the field of cartography.
- Experience in teaching at the university level, with a commitment to student-centered pedagogy.
Preferred:
- Experience with advanced GIS software and cartographic design tools, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies in cartography, including web mapping, spatial data visualization, and geospatial analysis.
- Strong networking skills with a proven ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external stakeholders.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in GIS software and tools for cartographic visualization and analysis.
- Proficient in programming languages such as Python or R for spatial data processing.
- Knowledge of database management systems and spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS).
